Chapter 5: The Mission Begins Preparingthe Way Way of the of the Lord Lord  CONCEPT D  Wandering Preacher, Unique Teacher

Like Rabbis of His Day - Jesus  roamed from place to place teaching & accompanied by band of disciples  taught in synagogues or wherever people gathered to listen

Unlike Rabbis of His Day - Jesus  Had a different notion of kingdom.  Claimed special role - he would personally establish & embody the kingdom  Claimed himself as the sole judge of the truth of what he taught  Used parables  Performed miracles

Jesus & His Disciples: A Unique Relationship  Different from that of other rabbis & their followers  Disciples did not choose Jesus, he called them.

Jesus & His Disciples: A Unique Relationship  He called them to a lasting relationship with him.  They were called to share his mission.

 So, for us to be disciples today:  Have a personal, lasting relationship with God.  Share Jesus’ mission in proclaiming his kingdom.

The 12 Apostles   Israelites at 1 time had 12 tribes - each descending from Jacob’s 12 sons.  The 12 apostles were the foundation of a new community of faith, a new Israel the Christian church.

The 12 Apostles   Apostle: from Greek word “to send forth”  They shared Jesus’ power.  After Jesus’ death & resurrection they continued to preach, heal & make disciples through baptizing in his name.

The 12 Apostles   Ordinary people, who, because of Jesus were capable of extraordinary things.
