SOS – Supporting Our Students Responding to Students in Distress at UNF

Who are our Students? How do we know when they are in distress?

How do we respond to students in distress? Demonstrate a caring attitude Be aware of resources Refer Report

University Resources Academic Advising Counseling Center Disability Resource Center Employee Assistance Program Equal Opportunity and Diversity Office Financial Aid Housing and Residence Life Human Resources – Employee and Labor Relations Interfaith Center Lend-a-Wing Food Pantry LGBT Resource Center One Stop Student Services Military and Veterans Resource Center Student Health Center Student Ombudsman Student Wellness Center Women’s Center/Victim’s Advocates

Factors to consider Is the student an Injustice Collector? Is their behavior changing? Have they made comments about harm to self or others?

If you answer yes to any of these questions, REPORT to SOS! Tom VanSchoor Dean of Students tvanscho@unf.edu 904-620-1491

Also consider the students observed behavior? Disruptive? Threatening – Direct or Indirect? Violent?

And finally, consider the timing of your referral

The SOS Team The SOS team identifies and when necessary, intervenes in situations involving students whose behaviors may be cause for concern. SOS will: Investigate from multiple perspectives, Determine if this is an isolated incident or a pattern requiring intervention, And if so, develop a response to meet the student’s needs, balanced with the needs of the University

FAQ’s Is my report confidential/anonymous? Will I be told the outcome? When/what type of behavior should I report? How do I know who to call? What information will I be asking you to provide? Other Questions?
