NIH SMALL GRANT PROGRAM (R03) WORKSHOP: ADMINISTRATIVE SUMMARY Mindy Solivan

What is the Small Grant Program (R03)?  The aim is to “support small research projects that can be carried out in a short period of time with limited resources.”  Type of projects funded by the R03 mechanism include (but are not limited to):  Pilot or feasibility studies  Secondary analysis of existing data  Small, self-contained research projects  Development of research methodology  Development of new research technology

Things to note  Maximum budget period: 2 years  R03 cannot be renewed  One resubmission is allowed  Maximum budget request: $50,000 direct costs per year  Preliminary data not required but may be included if available.  A doctoral student may not apply for an R03 grant to support thesis or dissertation research.

Application Documents  Standard required documents*  Project Summary (limited to 30 lines of text)  Project Narrative (limited to 2-3 sentences)  Facilities and Other Resources  Equipment  Biosketches for all Key personnel (limited to 4 pages per person)  Specific Aims (limit 1 page)  Research Strategy (limit 6 pages)  References  Human Subjects Documents (if applicable)  Vertebrate Animals document (if applicable)  Resource Sharing Plan  Budget Justification *NOTE: The page limits listed are for Parent R03 mechanisms. Page limitations and requirements may vary depending on the specific funding opportunity announcement. Please work with your proposal manager to determine the appropriate page limitations.

Participating Institutes and Centers Note: Not all ICs accept Parent R03 Applications.  FIC, NCATS, NCCAM, NCI, NEI, NHLBI, NIAMS, NIDCD, NIDCR, NIDDK, NIGMS, NLM, ORIP (these ICs have their own R03 specific funding opportunities – please see their IC specific websites for more details)  NIMHD does not use the R03 mechanism

Important ORC Information  Contact your Proposal Manager at ORC when you decide you want to apply.  The Proposal Manager responsibilities:  Help develop budget  Complete grants.gov application package  Review final proposal for compliance  Submit completed application package  Research Development:  Editorial assistance / Guidelines review  Optional Red Team Review  Identifying additional funding opportunities  Identifying potential collaborators
