Issues in Aging Class 6 Life Review Culture Change

“ Life is like a patchwork quilt. Even if it doesn’t have a pattern to it, and even if you don’t like every square, when you look at it all together, it’s a work of art.” Author unknown

Pretest for Class Six True or False ______ Life Review is an exploration into the future ______ Your senses have nothing to do with reminiscence ______ Everyone has a history worth sharing.

Life Review Life Review is reviewing, organizing, and evaluating one’s life as a whole in order for the individual to consider one’s life as unique. A person’s own hopes and expectations are considered. Usually in the final phase of life Can be both sad and happy – explain…

Reminiscence Involve certain positive qualities such as: – History – Cultural – Affiliation – Comfort – Heritage – legacy

What brings you back examples?? Smells – childhood Sounds – The beach, woods, rivers Tastes – candy Sights – Dolls, toys, photos, etc

Life Review and Reminisce Negative – Dwelling in the past….??? – Repeating / reliving the past Positive / benefits – Improved affect – Increase socialization – Opportunities for others to listen

Put yourself in their shoes What are your residents talking about? Take on their role

“ Every man has a history worth knowing if he could tell it, or if we could draw it from him ” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Culture Changes African Americans – Higher birthrate – Higher mortality in mid life – Lower paying jobs – Social security dependent – Later in life living in poverty – Grandmothers raising children – More likely to be living at home in later life Asian Americans – Becoming highly westernized – Older are highly respected – Females live long – Stay at home long

Culture changes Hispanic – Younger are not following cultures – Becoming more “Americanized” – Largest population increase Elderly – 400% increase by year 2020 – Higher increase in nursing homes What cultures here?? How will you / your facility help / assist your residents with their culture influences? – Examples

Culture Most cultures see aging in a negative way – Most youth respect elders but many begin to “brush away” seniors as time goes on – With the demands of current affairs More cultures place families in nursing homes due to need for money Each culture reacts differently to placement

Good Luck! Thank you to all who have taken this class and best of luck in the future! Post Test
