Assignment 1 Social networking: to be or not to be?

Social networking types In your books, make a list of all the different types of social networking Now write down all the different ways of accessing these networks What do we use these networks for? How are these networks abused?

Personal views ForAgainst Facebook – a place where I can store all my pictures and share them with friends without having to print them Ask FM – because it essentially turned into a bullying site and a young girl committed suicide Keeping in touch with people I don’t see very often In a table, write down all the reasons you are ‘for’ social networking, or specific social networks and all the reasons you are ‘against’. For example: Count up the different reasons you have on each side of the table. Overall, does this tell you that you are for or against? Do you agree with the numbers? If not, why not? What is influencing you personally?

Rants What are the features of a rant? Mind map your ideas: Rants

What do we remember for Writing to Argue? AFORESTIMP in a CAR What other language devices can we include in our writing to make it interesting and sophisticated? Personification Extended similes Extended metaphors Sarcasm Humour

Extended metaphors and similes Basically, these are just metaphors and similes that are kept going throughout the piece of writing. For example: Social networking is like a cocktail party. All the guests can chat and get to know each other. The fun can also lead to professional opportunities for work. Facebook is a drug and the contacts are like a users address book of dealers and other users. There is no escape from the addiction.

Revision of Language Devices Now write your own examples of each of the following devices in the context of social networking (the aim is for you to include these in your coursework): Personification Extended simile Extended metaphor Sarcasm Humour

Opening and Closing line To write a really effective piece of coursework you need a really forceful opening line and a really convincing closing line which rounds off your argument eloquently. Look at the examples of opening and closing lines on the next slide and discuss with your partner which ones are the best and why?

Good or not so good? Why? Opening lines: I hate Facebook. Facebook: a social masterpiece or a dangerous friend? I want to talk to you today about the pros and cons of social networking. Social networking heralded a new dawn of virtual societies, but are the hidden perils of online anonymity now coming to light? Closing lines: I hate Facebook. Tweet this: #socialnetworkingisthewayforward. There will be no escape: internet on your desktop; internet on your phone; internet in your car; Google Glass internet in your glasses! The list is endless… Therefore I believe social networking is a really good thing.

Structure Paragraph 1: Interesting opening line, introduce your argument, make it clear what you are ranting about (social networking itself or people who are against social networking) (100 words) Paragraph 2: give some background information about different networks and where they can be accessed (100 words) Paragraph 3: discuss the uses of social networking and whether you think these are positive or negative (200 words) Paragraph 4: discuss the negative abuses of social networking (if you are in favour of social networking overall then this could be the counter argument) (200 words) Paragraph 5: talk about the future of social networking (use your research homework) (200 words) Paragraph 6: sum up the argument and end with a convincing closing line (100 words) Also include a 1 or 2 word dramatic paragraph somewhere in the writing – you can decide where. You will end up with at least 7 paragraphs.
