FCLA Services Jim Corey Director, FCLA Task Force on the Future of Academic Libraries in Florida 7/19/2010

FCLA Services Overview LMS – Library (not Learning) Management System (aka Integrated Library System or ILS) Discovery Tool E-Resource Management Local Digital Collections Digital Preservation Program Technology Infrastructure

FCLA Services LMS Single system for all SUS libraries Outside Florida most universities have their own 28 Colleges share one via CCLA Florida private academic libraries have their own Florida public libraries have their own county or municipal systems K-12 libraries have their own or share at the district level SUS and FCS already highly consolidated

FCLA Services Discovery More than the old library catalog Much other data harvested for inclusion Single system for all SUS libraries 28 Colleges share one via CCLA Some other Florida libraries have their own SUS and FCS already very consolidated

FCLA Services E-Resources Most e-resources rented, not owned (i.e., licensed) Data lives on commercial vendor servers FCLA has several licenses for the SUS All SUS libraries have additional licenses CCLA has several licenses for Colleges State Library has some for all Florida libraries Other Florida libraries license their own

FCLA Services Digital Collections “Locally” digitized materials – mostly unique Digitization done in the libraries Servers available at: –FCLA – for all SUS –UF – UF and Caribbean materials –USF – their own materials –UCF – Central Florida Memory project –Other SUS libraries – on a lesser scale –State Library –Other Florida libraries

FCLA Services Preservation Program More than a data repository Active preservation for long-term access –Format analysis and migration –Ongoing fixity and validity checking FCLA runs the only such program in Florida Well-known nationally and internationally

FCLA Services Technology Infrastructure Co-located at UF CNS and FSU NWRDC datacenters 63% of servers virtualized - others too large with current hardware 95% Linux – was AIX and Solaris 311 TB disk storage; grows by ~30 TB per year Production services COOP'd at NWRDC
