International Masterclasses “Hands on Particle Physics“ EPPOG outreach meeting, London, Michael Kobel Dresden University Germany

General (new) Features Dates: Two Components International Masterclass Weeks w/ video conf 12 student days: – teacher‘s day: Sa ~ 5 institutes/ day = 65 masterclasses most days: DELPHi + OPAL data for Z0 decays Institute masterclasses w/o video conference January – April 06: 22 masterclasses (not counting the UK masterclasses) Schedule: Video Conference: Quiz for students added more lively, big fun for students exported desktop: more stable More details later

Participation 59 institutes from 18 countries (unchanged) countries new: CH and US (  non-European!) paused: CERN and FI 15 (!) new institutes, (15 paused) AT: Wien Univ CH: Zurich D: Dresden, Siegen ES: Granada, Zaragoza I: Udine PT: Coimbra SK: B. Bystrica, Nitra, Presov, Trencin, Trnava US Quarknet: Brookhaven, Florida State Estimated number of students: institutes participated on more than one occasion 4 towns: teachers‘ day on Saturday, Athens, Barcelona, Katovice, Torino

Central organisation people: (much too few, hampered by MK move to Dresden) Michael Kobel Gisela Fischer (secretary) Christian Helzel (until 01/06: CD and Web Site) funding German research minstry BMBF (Christian 5h/week, not only for MCs) Video Conference technical: Joao Fernandez (CERN) Viktor Michalcin and Marek Domaracky (VK Slovakia) funding: CERN and Slovak Ministry for Education moderators: Silvia Schuh (ATLAS), Dave Barney (CMS), Mike Lamont (LHC) invited scientists National Organisation contact persons in each country responsibles for each institute Organisation Team and Funding

Material:Update and Funding Web Site / CD updated by Christian Helzel 14 new institute pages Hands on CERN now also in German (Michael Hauschild) free CD print and distribution to participants (4000 €, BMBF) Corporate Identity EPPOG logo on Website and CD Additional Material sponsored by DESY (HERA Brochure) CERN (Prizes for Quiz)

Video Conferences hours First half discussed the results from the Z analysis

Video Conferences (cont.) Second half included a quiz (developed by Jorgen D’Hondt, Steven Lowette and Dave Barney 10 multiple-choice questions plus one bonus Students worked in pairs Small prizes offered by CERN Purpose was to increase interaction between institutes and CERN For the most part it worked! Some students even achieved 10/10 The PROTON The NEUTRON The ELECTRON The NEUTRINO Question 1: Which of the following was the first sub- atomic particle to be discovered? Question 4: Which of the following is the most massive object? The ‘Z’ boson The TOP quark The ‘W’ boson An atom of SILVER Question 6: What fraction of the mass in the Universe is thought to be of a different kind to that of the stars and planets? 0% - i.e. the universe is all made of the same stuff 5% 35% 95%

Echo Immediate local echo press TV (e.g. Dresden)  please send any documentations! evaluation sheets only few came back to me (M.K.) so far  please send missing evaluation sheets evaluation: no person identified, yet (IPN Kiel or Uni Dresden) planned articles Physics education (pending from 2005, IPN, Erik, M.K.) CNL: CERN Computing Courier (Joao) Interactions.org newsletter (Beth & Ken from Quarknet) Symmetry (Beth & Ken from Quarknet) others: INFN news, PPARC magazine… ?

Future? YES !

Future: Organisation Collect comments, especially about new video conference format with quiz established? more exercises, especially LHC (and HERA?) teachers‘ day future, current response (3 of 4 institutes): worthwhile to continue, but format needs overhaul more time for discussion about particle physics at school improve low teachers‘ participation (cancellations!) by –preparing teachers day more thoroughly –schedule it not on a Saturday/ Weekend (majority vote) central CERN IT and Slovak VK support for VRVS/EVO video conference indispensible VRVS/EVO tests beforehand mandatory, even for experienced sites support also needed during video conference VRVS/EVO support should be firmly established for next years.

Future: Funding URGENTLY need funding for people (CD updates, Website, Organisation) hardware (CD, possibly teacher‘s material) Facts and Plans further German BMBF support questionable no response from EPS-HEPP plan: try German Bosch Foundation other suggestions highly welcome! Thoughts good and wide press and media echo needed including teachers might help (a „must“ for Bosch) Additional institute masterclasses over the year, separated from main event, underline success

Impressions (more to be added,  send links!) Dresden, 14.3.
