Introduction to Interior Design What is interior design?
Where do we get light?.
Space is the three-dimensionality of a object. With a sculpture or architecture you can walk around them, look above them, and enter them, this refers.
Topic 2 : Reflection. Essential Learning Outcome I can use the geometric ray model and the law of reflection to describe and predict angles of reflection.
Transparent objects allow you to see clearly through them
Chapter 5 The Law of reflection allows mirrors to form images.

1.SPACE  The most important element of design  The area a designer works with.
Adapted from Mr. Gilstrap, Mrs. Phillips, and Mr. Buenrostro’s Lesson Date.
What is Light?. Light Look around you. What do you see? You might say books, pencils, desks, chairs. But what you really see is light bouncing off books,

Light Energy. Light travels in straight lines… until it is reflected (bounced) off of an object…
Plane mirror: a regular, flat mirror like those used in bathrooms, in cars, by dentists, etc. A mirror is just a reflective surface (made of a thin sheet.
Principles of light, and the law of reflection What happens when light strikes glass? Or waxed paper? Or a book? If light travels freely through =transparent.
Properties of Reflective Waves Flat Mirrors. Light travels in a straight line Some light is absorbed Some light is redirected – “Reflected”

Planar structures incorporating LIGHT & the WHEEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Planar Constuction Creation from flat sided forms Explore the effects of natural vs artificial lighting Explore use of flat surfaces that may enhance the effects of light – mirrors? Can shadows be an integral part of the piece (shadows ON form or shadows CAST by it) Surface texture can also make a difference in the effects of light (rough, smooth, polished, etc) Can create patterns as well (Light vs shadow)

Materials Thick paper Cardboard Matt board corners Foam core Matt board (I dont have) PAPER Mirrors ????

Construction Experiment with fastening devices Cutting, folding, creating tabs and slots, bending, sewing, and creasing Use OPEN forms and negative space Can hang on wall or from ceiling, sit on table/floor

Le Corbusier Notre Dame du Haut Varying distances into the wall; stained glass

Sol LeWitt Small cubes create larger structures and create value in different areas

Poul Henningsen Artichoke Lamp

Larry Bell Tinted but transparent glass; appears darker where it visually overlaps Allows us to judge where the panels lie in space and how they are situated in relation to one another

Hanging planes Shadows cast on the wall due to light

The flat planes of this structure and how the light hits them creates and entire new dimension to the sculpture (shadows)

Richard Sweeney Cut and altered paper with LIGHTING

Different types of lighting situations

Francisco Infante – Threshold of Curved Space Paned mirrors – reflecting surroundings and also appearing to DEFY GRAVITY!
