Mrs. Breutzmann’s Kindergarten News Traits Writing Dear Parents, Please continue to encourage your child to practice writing their first and last name using appropriate upper and lower case letters and numbers “ Homeplay” packets will go home on Monday and do not need to be returned until the following Monday, October 28 th. (There is no school on 10/24 and 10/25) Traits Writing: (Getting Started) This week the students continued to participate in a read- aloud of the book: Grumpy Bird by Jeremy Tankard. Students learned another reason writers write is to share their opinions (persuasive) Students learned to share their own opinion by voting on their favorite color then tallying the votes and recording results Students chose and charted their favorite book and shared their opinion why they choose that book Students learned the words a character says is called “dialogue” Students drew a picture of a character in their journal and added “talking marks” to their dialogue Students engaged in an interactive writing experience and created a story map that focused on the words; First, Then, and Finally Math *Talking about the teen numbers and the “tricky teens” (10,11,12) *Recognizing them and putting them in order. *Counting by 10’s to 100 *Introduced the concept of estimation *Students compared sizes to estimate * We continue to look for patterns everywhere! HOMELINK 2.5 Star of the Week Aidan Oct. 28-Nov.1 Bring in your completed poster on the Monday of your week and a show and share item of your choice on the Friday. Afternoon Literacy and Math Extensions We have been talking about bats and spiders. The kids are so excited! We have been reading a lot of non-fiction books and we have learned lots of new facts! We made spider and bat fact books. We read Stellaluna and made our own bat and wrote bat facts on him. We learned that bats eat 600 mosquitoes in an hour. We worked in small groups to count out piles of bugs in groups of 10 to make 100 and glued them to show how many it is! We also made our own spiders and wrote 3 great spider facts. We learned the Raffi song Spider on the floor. 10/18

This month our afternoon kiddos started “book buddies” with Ms. Rounds’ 5 th grade class. Each kindergartener is matched up with a 5 th grader or two. We meet with our buddies twice a month to hear stories read by the 5 th graders and then we engage in a writing activity with our buddy! The kids are SO EXCITED and had a great time! We read the story I need my monster and then we each made a monster with our buddy and wrote describing words to tell about our monsters! The kids love to see their buddies in the hall and are asking EVERY day when the next time we will see them is. You can check out our monsters in the hallway by our classroom door during conferences Important Dates Tues., Oct. 22NPTO Fundraiser pick-up 3:30-7PM/gym Wed., Oct. 23Early Release – 2PM dismissal!
