NEST Day 4: Focused Notes

 Revisit notes  Introduce Costa’s Levels of Inquiry  Practice writing questions Today’s Goals

Focused Notes are MANY things…  A way to collect information in class  A way to interact with the information you learned (today’s focus)  A way to collaborate with peers  A tool to help you study information What are Focused Notes?

 Previously we…  Reviewed note taking and reading tips  Read a text independently  Wrote our own Focused Notes  Collaborated with a partner to check our notes  Please take out…  Your Policies and Procedures  Your Focused Notes PINK handout  Focused Notes from previous days Let’s Review

 Use your PINK handout page and turn to “Costa’s Levels of Inquiry”  Today you will be focusing on the different levels of inquiry questions that you can use in your Cornell Notes Preparing to Write Questions

 There are 3 Levels to Costa’s Levels of Inquiry  Each one asks for a different type of thinking  The type of question you ask determines the type of thinking you will do Preparing to Write Questions

 The type of question you write, will largely depend on the type of information you’d like to discover.  LEVEL 1 questions are  “knowledge gathering” questions. ---  You either know it or you don’t  They are more FACT-based. LET’S PRACTICE… Preparing to Write Questions

Level 1 questions for this picture include… The questions asked require you to reply with facts. Can you think of any more possible level 1 questions? Preparing to Write Questions

 LEVEL 2 questions are…  “processing” questions  Taking facts and grouping, sorting, comparing, analyzing, explaining, and prioritizing them. LET’S PRACTICE… Preparing to Write Questions

Level 2 questions for this picture include… The questions asked require you to take the facts and use them. Can you think of any more possible level 2 questions? Preparing to Write Questions

 LEVEL 3 questions are  “application” questions. ---  Taking facts/ information and…  applying it to a new situation  judging/predicting an outcome  They require more understanding of the information, rather than just “knowing” it. LET’S PRACTICE… Preparing to Write Questions

Level 3 questions for this picture include… The questions asked require you to apply the facts in new ways. Can you think of any more possible level 3 questions? Preparing to Write Questions

Let’s Practice using this picture… -Collaborate and think of  Level 1  Level 2 and  Level 3 questions Preparing to Write Questions

 Let’s APPLY our new knowledge..  Before writing your questions, you need to review your notes and ask yourself-  If these (the notes side/ right side) are the answers, what are the questions? Preparing to Write Questions

QUESTIONSNOTES What resources does the school website provide? What are the most important website resources for student? SCHOOL WEBSITE- Provides info. and resources Homework posted AR lists provided Calendar of school events Staff contact info.
