Night Ride Update Industry Meeting June 28, 2012

Evaluation sustainability The objective of Night Ride was to: – explore the potential for late night ridership, – assess and mitigate safety and security concerns –Assess and address operational logistics – in the pursuit of a a city-wide integrated bus/taxi late night service. Responsible Hospitality Edmonton recognizes the need for this service for a wide variety of potential users, its mandate however focuses on advocacy to address the needs of late night entertainment. Responsible Hospitality supports Edmonton Transit’s June 24 proposal for extended bus service until 3 am, with consideration being given to service frequency for the late night rush hour ( 2 – 3 am) and that weekends be the starting point for service. ETS Expenses (Direct, Incremental) Operational - buses, drivers, fuel16,673 Bus facilities 1,200 Safety 8,085* Security 5,360* ETS Revenue Cash/ tickets 1,947 Passes 1290 riders 0 Sub-total $29,370 RHE Expenses (pilot only) Promotional, Rider survey, data collection, community requested security, $16,432 TOTAL $45,802 * base level required, not maximized

Evaluation criteria Ridership Minimum ridership threshold for late night service is 15 passenger boarding per hour. New services are required to achieve 50% of the recommended minimum performance level after 1 year; 100% after 2 years (from Transit Service Standards Policy C539) Night Ride route required 6.55 hours of service per night, so minimum ridership threshold would be 98 passengers per night. In the 15 weekends Night Ride operated, it met or exceeded the 50% requirement 18/30 nights and of those the 100% requirement was met or exceeded 4/30 nights.

Evaluation Safety & Security In the three months Night Ride operated: Incidents of disorder at bus stops 0 reported Incidents of disorder on bus 1 reported Incidents of disorder at Transit Center 0 reported Incidents of disorder for Taxi drivers 0 reported Number of 'sick' buses 1 reported Incidents of disorder in on-route communities 0 reported Incidents of disorder in Southgate communities 3 reported** ** On follow-up, none of the incidents were supported as being Night Ride patrons, based on disembarkation statistics and EPS reports

Evaluation criteria Bus-taxi integration For patrons - 19% of total ridership were people who took the bus to Southgate to catch a cab to further destinations. Anecdotal evidence collected on bus: –patrons said a safe, warm 20 minute bus ride to catch a cab within minutes at Southgate was preferable to competing for a taxi on Whyte Ave –Continued to socialize with friends on bus –Cost savings for pass-holders For cab drivers it saved them a 30 block drive to pick up their next fare. Improvements to service –Patron activated light-up signage for Taxi driver awareness of a fare, –Washrooms and Waiting area.
