Unit-7, Lesson-5 The Shake and The Quake

Learning Objective: By the end of the lesson, you will have learnt: ◊ the definition of earthquake. ◊ fault lines. ◊ safety measures to be taken to minimize the losses. ◊ some unknown words. ( Vocabulary Practice)

▫ Earthquake is a sudden, violent shaking of the ground, sometimes causing great destruction.

Key Features of the Lesson: ▫ Fault lines mean structural defects of the ground. At the time of shaking of the ground, the land sometimes break in some places. These lines of breaks are called fault lines.

Safety measures to be taken to minimize the losses:

1.Raising public awareness 2. Taking adequate precautions 3. Adopting safety measures 4. Receiving a well-developed plan of the city 5. Avoiding living in active earthquake zone 5. Developing an earthquake resistant building code 6. Following the code as mandatory

◊ Comprise: consist of ◊ Minimize: reduce That family consists of four members

◊ Precaution: prior consciousness ◊ Geologist: a scientist who studies Geology

Group Work: Group A: Describe the after-effects of an earthquake. Use the following picture as your clue. Group B: What precautions would you suggest as safety measures against earthquakes in Dhaka city?

Evaluation: a)What is earthquake? b)What do fault lines mean? c)What precautions would you suggest as safety measures against earthquakes in Dhaka city?

Home Work: Have you ever experienced an earthquake? Describe it. or Have you seen earthquake disasters on TV? Describe what you have seen.

good bye
