Description According to the EPA, the CWA is to restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the nation's waters by preventing point and nonpoint pollution sources, providing assistance to publicly owned treatment works for the improvement of wastewater treatment, and maintaining the integrity of wetlands The CWA seeks to alleviate the problems associated with contaminated surface water and the issues with toxic pollutants released into water sources.

Agency Responsible The EPA oversees the enforcement/ regulation of the CWA Some sub-agencies for specific applications include: National Pollution Discharge Elimination System, National Estuary Program, National Coastal Water Program, and the Great Lakes National Program Office
