We reflect what we revere …either for our ruin or restoration. Big Idea of this Series

We reflect what we revere… “Psychosis is the final outcome of all that is wrong with a culture.” -Christopher Lasch in The Culture of Narcissism Original Design:God  Humanity  Nature Sinful Desire:Humanity  God  Nature Actual Results:God  Nature  Humanity

We reflect what we revere… “Psychosis is the final outcome of all that is wrong with a culture.” -Christopher Lasch in The Culture of Narcissism Original Design:God  Humanity  Nature Sinful Desire:Humanity  God  Nature Actual Results:God  Nature  Humanity “The alternative to this view is to identify something besides sin as the main problem with the world and something besides God as the main remedy. That demonizes something that is not completely bad, and makes an idol out of something that cannot be the ultimate good.” -Tim Keller in Counterfeit Gods

We reflect what we revere… “Psychosis is the final outcome of all that is wrong with a culture.” -Christopher Lasch in The Culture of Narcissism Original Design:God  Humanity  Nature Sinful Desire:Humanity  God  Nature Actual Results:God  Nature  Humanity Because we deeply distrust God and despise our limitations & overall powerlessness, we worship the idol of power & control.

The Powerlessness of a Powerful King Daniel 2:1-3  1 In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; his mind was troubled and he could not sleep. 2 So the king summoned the magicians, enchanters, sorcerers and astrologers to tell him what he had dreamed. When they came in and stood before the king, 3 he said to them, “I have had a dream that troubles me and I want to know what it means.”  The most powerful man on earth was anxious

When they came in and stood before the king, 3 he said to them, “I have had a dream that troubles me and I want to know what it means.”  The most powerful man on earth was anxious “Perhaps the most puzzling statistics are the ones that reveal that we're significantly more anxious than countries in the developing world, many of which report only a fraction of the diagnosable cases of anxiety that we do. One of the reasons for this is that the people in many of these third-world nations are more accustomed to dealing with uncertainty and unpredictability... Is it true that the more "rational control" we have, the more anxious we are? Maybe that's because each of us is stuck with knowing how much the very future of one's own being is in one's own hands. We're stuck with being control freaks, always calculating--nervously or anxiously--about our personal security. We're the people least likely to relax and let God or nature take its course.” -March 27, 2011 Excerpt from The Daily Dish in The Atlantic

The Powerlessness of a Powerful King Daniel 2:26-35  26 The king asked Daniel (also called Belteshazzar), “Are you able to tell me what I saw in my dream and interpret it?” 27 Daniel replied, “No wise man, enchanter, magician or diviner can explain to the king the mystery he has asked about, 28 but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries. He has shown King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in days to come. Your dream and the visions that passed through your mind as you were lying in bed are these: 29 “As Your Majesty was lying there, your mind turned to things to come, and the revealer of mysteries showed you what is going to happen. 30 As for me, this mystery has been revealed to me, not because I have greater wisdom than anyone else alive, but so that Your Majesty may know the interpretation and that you may understand what went through your mind.

The Powerlessness of a Powerful King 31 “Your Majesty looked, and there before you stood a large statue—an enormous, dazzling statue, awesome in appearance. 32 The head of the statue was made of pure gold, its chest and arms of silver, its belly and thighs of bronze, 33 its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of baked clay. 34 While you were watching, a rock was cut out, but not by human hands. It struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay and smashed them. 35 Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver and the gold were all broken to pieces and became like chaff on a threshing floor in the summer. The wind swept them away without leaving a trace. But the rock that struck the statue became a huge mountain and filled the whole earth.

The Powerlessness of a Powerful King Daniel 2:46-47  46 Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell prostrate before Daniel and paid him honor and ordered that an offering and incense be presented to him. 47 The king said to Daniel, “Surely your God is the God of gods and the Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries, for you were able to reveal this mystery.”

The Powerlessness of a Powerful King Daniel 2:46-47  46 Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell prostrate before Daniel and paid him honor and ordered that an offering and incense be presented to him. 47 The king said to Daniel, “Surely your God is the God of gods and the Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries, for you were able to reveal this mystery.” The king’s dream revealed that much of our thinking about ourselves and our power/control is a sham…we are really not in control of very much of anything…

The Powerlessness of a Powerful King Daniel 4:10-17  10 These are the visions I saw while lying in bed: I looked, and there before me stood a tree in the middle of the land. Its height was enormous. 11 The tree grew large and strong and its top touched the sky; it was visible to the ends of the earth. 12 Its leaves were beautiful, its fruit abundant, and on it was food for all. Under it the wild animals found shelter, and the birds lived in its branches; from it every creature was fed. 13 “In the visions I saw while lying in bed, I looked, and there before me was a holy one, a messenger, coming down from heaven. 14 He called in a loud voice: ‘Cut down the tree and trim off its branches; strip off its leaves and scatter its fruit. Let the animals flee from under it and the birds from its branches.

The Powerlessness of a Powerful King 15 But let the stump and its roots, bound with iron and bronze, remain in the ground, in the grass of the field. “‘Let him be drenched with the dew of heaven, and let him live with the animals among the plants of the earth. 16 Let his mind be changed from that of a man and let him be given the mind of an animal, till seven times pass by for him. 17 “‘The decision is announced by messengers, the holy ones declare the verdict, so that the living may know that the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes and sets over them the lowliest of people.’

The Powerlessness of a Powerful King Daniel 4:24-27  24 “This is the interpretation, Your Majesty, and this is the decree the Most High has issued against my lord the king: 25 You will be driven away from people and will live with the wild animals; you will eat grass like the ox and be drenched with the dew of heaven. Seven times will pass by for you until you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes. 26 The command to leave the stump of the tree with its roots means that your kingdom will be restored to you when you acknowledge that Heaven rules. 27 Therefore, Your Majesty, be pleased to accept my advice: Renounce your sins by doing what is right, and your wickedness by being kind to the oppressed. It may be that then your prosperity will continue.”

The Powerlessness of a Powerful King Daniel 4:28-32  28 All this happened to King Nebuchadnezzar. 29 Twelve months later, as the king was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, 30 he said, “Is not this the great Babylon I have built as the royal residence, by my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty?” 31 Even as the words were on his lips, a voice came from heaven, “This is what is decreed for you, King Nebuchadnezzar: Your royal authority has been taken from you. 32 You will be driven away from people and will live with the wild animals; you will eat grass like the ox. Seven times will pass by for you until you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes.”

The Powerlessness of a Powerful King Original Design:God  Humanity  Nature Sinful Desire:Humanity  God  Nature Actual Results:God  Nature  Humanity “To be your own God and live for your own glory and power leads to the most bestial and cruel kind of behavior. Pride makes you a predator, not a person.” -Tim Keller in Counterfeit Gods

The Powerlessness of a Powerful King What was the message to Nebuchadnezzar?  Vs so that the living may know that the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes and sets over them the lowliest of people. Why was it so significant?  Cuts through our abusiveness & judgment of others (SUPERIORITY)  Cuts through our insecurity & fear (INFERIORITY)

The Powerlessness of a Powerful King Why did God bring all this about?  To discipline him…i.e. to free him from falsehood  Beware: Not all difficulty falls in this category Did Nebuchadnezzar’s choices really matter?  Vs Renounce your sins by doing what is right, and your wickedness by being kind to the oppressed. It may be that then your prosperity will continue.  His repentance mattered at every point in the story…it just took him a long time to truly get it…

The Powerlessness of a Powerful King Daniel 4:34-37  34 At the end of that time, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward heaven, and my sanity was restored. Then I praised the Most High; I honored and glorified him who lives forever. His dominion is an eternal dominion; his kingdom endures from generation to generation. 35 All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as he pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back his hand or say to him: “What have you done?”

The Powerlessness of a Powerful King 36 At the same time that my sanity was restored, my honor and splendor were returned to me for the glory of my kingdom. My advisers and nobles sought me out, and I was restored to my throne and became even greater than before. 37 Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and exalt and glorify the King of heaven, because everything he does is right and all his ways are just. And those who walk in pride he is able to humble.

A Final Conclusion… We desperately need more Daniels!!!  Deeply dependent upon God  Empathetic and caring for the king  Able to courageously speak forth the truth without fear
