Main Topic Training –Sara Webber Training and Development
Our Mission The Training and Development Department is a centralized resource of continuous learning for all Fermilab employees. We provide learning programs and services that assist employees in their job performance, career development, and professional growth. We are dedicated to providing our customers with program excellence and exceptional service.
Our Staff Barbara Brooks manages the Training and Development Department. Sara Webber coordinates the computer training function. Dotti Swanson handles enrollments and administration for training classes, the Tuition Assistance program, and the IITV program.
Our Curriculum The Training and Development Department offers a core curriculum of on-site computer training courses in the following areas: –Database design –Drawing/modeling techniques (i.e. AutoCad, IDEAS) –Multimedia presentations –Programming –Spreadsheet design –Systems administration –Web development –Word processing Courses outside of the core curriculum can be brought on site by customer request.
How We Operate Training and Development does not operate on the university model, but rather does needs-based training. Courses are offered when a customer requests them. We must meet a minimum enrollment (usually eight) to offer a course on site.
In-House Trainers vs. Vendors Outside Vendors –It is more cost effective to use outside vendors for most basic computer classes. In-House Trainers –Classes that contain information specific to Fermilab are best taught by in-house trainers. –We will also use in-house trainers when we have an in-house expert who is willing to teach a course. –Training and Development has developed an instructor certification program for our in-house trainers.
How Can We Work Together? PC Managers –Course ideas/ recommendations –Open lines of communication to keep Training aware of changes in Lab computing Training –Provide a better trained customer base –Open lines of communication to make PC managers aware of Training resources Any other ideas?
Current Issues in Training… Office 2000 vs. Office 2003 –When to switch our courses? –Would a new features overview course be useful? Project Management for IT Professionals –Do we foresee a need for it this spring? Other Ideas?
