WRITING THE PAPER WEEK 8

Writing the intro  Are these essential or optional, in an Intro?:  Gain the reader’s interest by offering an opening statement, or hook?  Give background and context by moving from the general to the particular?  Provide a rationale for researching and writing the text?  Define core terms necessary for understanding of the text  Present evidence and citations to support argument  State limitations eg to previous research, to current text  State overall purpose and aims of text  State how whole text is organized Indicate conclusion of text  Textbook, page 14

Writing the intro  Intro: 1 st paragraph: general statement about topic  Provides main arguments of paper  Concludes with thesis  The thesis: - last sentence of the paragraph - a strong statement that you can prove

Intro: opening sentence  Start your paper with a general statement about your topic that catches the reader’s attention:  A relevant quotation  Question  Anecdote  Fascinating fact  Definition  Analogy  The position opposing one you will take  Or a dilemma that needs a solution

Writing the thesis statement  State your arguable position on the topic that you will support with evidence in your body paragraphs

Writing the body  The body:  Is where the evidence to prove the thesis is presented  The info supports or proves the thesis statement  Supporting info: analysis, argument, evaluation, persuasion, comparison/ contrast  Each paragraph: a topic sentence, supporting and concluding sentences and a transition to the next paragraph

Writing the conclusion  Last paragraph of the paper  Summarizes how your paper proved the thesis  No new info is given here
