If you are off task, you WILL complete all assignments on your OWN. Complete exercise 27 on page 81. Complete exercises B and C (21-50) on page 84.

Bellwork: 10/10/12 YOU WILL NEED YOUR LANGUAGE BOOK TODAY! STUDY FOR YOUR VOCABULARY QUIZ! (words are on the back of speech notes) If you are talking, study time will be over AS SOON AS I WALK IN! P.S. I know it is FREEZING in here, please do not tell me.

Copy these notes: A complement is a word or word group that completes the meaning of a verb. A complement can be a noun, pronoun, or adjective. Ex: Aunt Edna looks happy and relaxed. Which words complete the meaning of the verb? First, what is the verb?

Copy these notes: As a class: 1.Marcella might become a chemist. 2.The raccoon watched us gardening in the backyard. 3.The clerks at that store are helpful. 4.She watched the cardinals.

Bellwork: 10/11/12 Copy these notes: Prove to me that you can do what you are supposed to without being asked and tomorrow’s quiz will be moved to MONDAY! A subject complement is a word or word group in the predicate that describes or identifies the subject. **Hint: identify your subject first. Next, identify the predicate of the sentence.** Ex: The surface felt sticky. Sticky describes the surface—which is the subject of the sentence.

Copy these notes: As a class, identify the subject complements: 1.How kind he is! 2.The winter seemed especially mild and sunny. 3.Mark Twain’s real name was Samuel Clemens. 4.I know what a treat this is for her.

Copy these notes: Subject complements come in two forms: predicate adjectives and predicate nominatives. A predicate adjective is an adjective in the predicate that modifies the subject. – Ex: The soup is hot. – What is the subject? Where is the predicate? What word is in the predicate that talks about the subject?

Copy these notes: A predicate nominative is a word or word group that is in the predicate and that identifies the subject or refers to it. Ex: Has she become a dentist? **Hint: What is the subject? What is the complete predicate? Where is the word that identifies or restates the subject?**

Classwork: Language Book page 104 exercise 16. Write the subject complement and then tell whether it is a predicate adjective (PA) or a predicate nominative (PN).

Bellwork 10/12/12: Write the complement in each sentence. State whether it is a PA or a PN. You will have FREE TIME if you are quiet and we can get through everything! 1.Mark Twain was a popular writer. 2.Ann is a reporter and an editor. 3.Our destination is Rome. 4.The boy’s new kite was blue. 5.This test seems really difficult. 6.I feel very confident of myself in English class. 7.I dress conservatively.

Copy these notes: A direct object is a noun, pronoun, or word group that tells who or what receives the action of a verb or shows the result of the action. Answers the question “Whom?” or “What?” after a transitive verb. (a verb that transfers action) Transitive verbs MUST have another word in order to make sense. Ex: The bookshelf holds.  this is a fragment – The bookshelf holds books.  now it is a sentence~!

Copy these notes: As a class, identify the direct objects: 1.Germs cause illness. 2.Peter said Gesundheit. 3.Lucy visited me. 4.What a scary movie we saw! 5.They were taking whatever was left.
