A butterfly has three main body parts. (body parts cont.) HEAD – the head is located at the front of the butterfly’s body. THORAX – the thorax is the middle body part. Life Cycle of the Butterfly Egg- a butterfly starts its life as an egg. Larva (caterpillar)- The larva hatches from the egg and eat leaves and flowers almost constantly. Pupa (chrysalis)- The caterpillar turns into a chrysalis (cocoon). Adult- A beautiful, flying adult butterfly emerges which will lay more eggs to repeat the cycle.
