Cataloger’s Desktop Refresher Part I March 2009

Too many resources! a. Standard Cataloguing Rules (e.g. AACR2, LCRI, SCM) b. MARC Coding manuals (e.g. MARC bibliographic, Codes for countries) c. Manuals for special materials (e.g. CONSER, Rare books) d. Web resources for cataloguers (e.g. Cataloguer’s Toolbox, Metadata initiatives) e. Articles on cataloguing theory and issues (e.g. FRBR) f. Links to OPACs (e.g. AMICUS, State libraries) g. Manuals in non-English languages The default view is to display all of the resources alphabetically.

Limiting the Resources list There are 2 ways of shortening the long, confusing list of resources: – Categories: limit the list by type of activity, type of material, etc., e.g. descriptive cataloguing resources Still too many! – Preferences: limit the list by setting your preferences; regulate which resources will display in the browse list

Limiting the Resources list: Preferences 1. Click on Preferences tab 2. Choose default interface (classic) 3. Set your address 4. Choose resources you want 5. Set view 6. Log-out and log back in to take effect

Browsing Table of Contents Often the fastest way to get to something is by using Cataloger’s Desktop like a book! (make sure you are in the browse tab) e.g. rules on pagination AACR Part I Description Chapter 2 Books Rule 2.5B Number of volumes/pagination

Browsing Table of Contents e.g. parallel titles AACR Part I Description Chapter 2 Books Rule 2.1 Title & Statement of responsibility Rule 2.1D Parallel titles

Quick search The quick search box is found in the top right-hand corner of the screen Desktop defaults to searching all resources which could produce a long list of results – E.g. search 246 Can be OK for really specific searches

Quick search combined with selected resource(s) For better results, choose the resource(s) that you want to search – Click on MARC Bibliographic and Library of Congress Rule Interpretations search 246 Many descriptive cataloguing answers can be found by choosing AACR2 & LCRI (and MARC bibliographic) and then doing a quick search

Quick search combined with selected resource(s) Other examples: – 2. ed. or 2a ed. for Spanish books – Symbols and diacritics in titles – Access points for collections – When do you include pagination for bibliographical references? – What MARC subfields do I use in a 111 tag for conferences?

2. ed. or 2a ed. for Spanish books Select AACR2, LCRI and MARC bibliographic Quick search: editions and abbreviations – From results: “numerals as instructed in appendix C.” appendix C – Click on appendix C You need to know the contents of appendix C – Click on browse tab – Click on Sync TOC to bring up the table of contents for the appendix Source of answer: C.8 Ordinal numerals

Symbols and diacritics in titles Select AACR2, LCRI and MARC bibliographic Quick search: symbol* or diacritic* Navigate through results – Use context for most likely section – Use arrows to navigate note: for replacing … with – – Quick search: “punctuation marks”

Access points for collections Select AACR ch 21 (access points) Quick search: collection* Once you have rule 21.7 you can navigate easily to LCRI and MARC through buttons Note: for descriptive rules trying searching chapters 1 and 2 for collective

When do you include pagination for bibliographical references? Select AACR2, LCRI and MARC bibliographic Quick search: “bibliographical references” – Answer is in the LCRI (2 nd hit in 2.7B notes)

What MARC subfields do I use in a 111 tag for conferences? Choose MARC bibliographic Quick search: 111 – Click on hyper-link in first result Note: you can also find examples in our TUG MARC manuals raphic/index.html

Advanced search Advanced search link is found under the quick search box. It divides the search into categories which search groups of resources E.g. search 246 in the MARC formats box

Searching selected resources The advanced search can also be combined with an individual resource or group of resources of your choice e.g. is a black and green illustration a col. ill.? Select AACR Advanced search: Colour* AND Bibliographic area: physical description

Advanced Search AACR2 e.g. series e.g. 21.1B2

Viewing results Results tab: simply lists the section and the resource Doc/Results tab: choose this tab to see your results in a greater context. One result at a time is displayed within the document page.

Navigating the results Within a document: move between results using the “next hit” and “prev hit” links at the top of the document screen Between documents: move between results using the “next hit doc” and “prev hit doc” links at the bottom of the screen

Switching to Document View Once you have reached the desired document, you can click on the “Document” tab to see your result in full-screen mode and hide your search results list
