Presentation transcript:

Alabama Mosaic continues an IMLS funded project, ( ) called the Cornerstone Project, which established the infrastructure for a statewide digital collection Content selection focuses on materials that support for teaching of Alabama History (curriculum enrichment guide at

Any repository can contribute resources related to Alabama history All contributions must be available online to the public at no cost Potential contributors must complete and submit a brief digital collection development plan Currently, contributors have added images, documents, and sound recordings

Alabama Mosaic uses ContentDM from OCLC This software allows a contributor to store and manage digital files, create metadata to facilitate retrieval, and supports user searching. Alabama Mosaic also includes a search engine that searches other locally installed ContentDM sites and presents an integrated set of results from central server and all of the connected ContentDM servers.

Alabama Mosaic Hosted Services Contributors: Create their own digital objects and ftp a presentation file to their password- protected space on the Alabama Mosaic server Create their own metadata using the Dublin Core template

Alabama Mosaic STRONGLY recommends that repositories with professional staff adopt the highest level of cataloging standards for their digital collections. Smaller repositories may not have professional staff and may operate with only volunteers. Minimal level entries are accepted.

With some limits, Alabama Mosaic provides: Workshops as well as consulting for planning digital collections Auburn University systems site provides training at its host site in Auburn Training for creating digital files (scanning) Training for creating metadata Advice for project management

Student / class projects are WELCOME! With some limits, personal collections are welcome Example: The Caroline Dean Wildflower Collection is a personal collection

Auburn University Libraries hosts the Alabama Mosaic website AUL Systems staff provide customer support Network of Alabama Academic Libraries coordinates the statewide program
