Factoring Trinomials Algebra IB Mr. Agnew March 19, 2003

Objective Factor by removing the GCF from a polynomialFactor by removing the GCF from a polynomial Completely factor trinomialsCompletely factor trinomials

Recall Process for Factoring… 1.Look for a GCF. If there is a GCF, pull it outside of the parentheses. 2.Determine if you can factor what remains. 3.Multiply coefficient of x 2 and constant (Quadrant 2). 4.Number in middle term (Quadrant 3). 5.Find two numbers that multiply to give number in Q3 and add to give number in Q4. 6.Create your two fractions. 7.Write binomials.

Factor the Following... 2x 2 - 7x + 6 GCF? NO Make Fraction Bars Reduce ANSWER: (x – 2)(2x – 3)

Factor the Following... 6x x + 9 GCF? NO Make Fraction Bars Reduce ANSWER: (2x + 9)(3x + 1)
