Manifest Destiny

Gap T-Shirt

Sparked Outrage

Petition and Boycotts William S. Yellowrobe, a Native poet and playwright, has posted this response to the t-shirt: “Let me get this straight? The Gap wants to sell T-shirts that read; “Manifest Destiny”? “The Only Good Indian is a Dead Indian” was taken? I know this sounds blunt and harsh, but we have to remember. People, thousands of people, Native people, who were not even considered human beings, died during this arrogant and pompous proclamation. This is another episode of American history where an idea, or arrogant statement, lead to the demise of Native people. This isn’t racism, this is a part of the racism that lead to genocide. Maybe a friend of mine is right. GAP should come out with a “Final Solution” T- shirt, or a “Got Slaves,” t-shirt.”

Gap’s Response "Thank you for your feedback regarding the "Manifest Destiny" t- shirt. Based on customer feedback, we will no longer offer the t- shirt in our stores or online."

Today’s Goal: We will understand the concept of Manifest Destiny We will understand why this tshirt sparked outrage - and whether you think it warrants a boycott

Manifest Destiny Manifest: Obvious / Clearly apparent Destiny: Fate

The Idea of Manifest Destiny It is America’s god-given right to civilize the west and expand to the Pacific Ocean.

Manifest Destiny, Mainfestly “Our claim is by the right of manifest destiny to overspread and to possess the whole of the continent which providence has given us for the development of the great experiment of liberty and federated self-government to us.” John Sullivan, Editor, NY Morning News, Dec. 27, 1845 (coined the term manifest destiny)

Image Analysis Use your historical thinking skills to analyze this picture Think about: How it’s trying to influence the viewer What symbols mean How light and color are used, etc.

John Gast’s “American Progress” 1870.

By Emmanuel Leutze, “Westward the course of empire takes its way.”1861.

Manifest Destiny’s Impact This idea was used to justify… Stealing land from Native Americans in the Indian Removal Act Deaths of thousands of Native Americans Wars with Native Americans To take their land War with Mexico To take their land

The response to this idea today: William S.

Question Is it offensive to promote the idea of Manifest Destiny on a tshirt? Why or why not?
