Networking Components by ASIF ISLAM Assignment 3 LTEC /07/20014

HUB A hub connects computers together and has one function: to send data from one compute port to another by connecting multiple computers to the same network. Cost: $33 to $2,000 LTEC 45502

SWITCH A switch has the same functionality as a hub. All wired computers can connect to the same network using a switch. The only difference is switches can only send the data to the computers that want them, which is more efficient and faster. And switches are newer technology than hubs. Cost: $33 to $66,000 Cisco Nexus 9508 Switch Chassis ($66,000) LTEC 45503

ROUTER A router including wireless routers sits between a modem and computers. It’s a device that takes information from modem and deliver them to wired and wireless devices on the network. It has an operating system and dedicated memory which directs dedicated data to each device. Cost: $29 to $399 LTEC 45504

BRIDGE Bridges have similar functionalities as switch and but it supports only one network boundary. Where switches have four or more. The primary duty of a bridge is to inspect incoming traffic and direct them as needed. It has the capability of inspecting the destination MAC address to verify if device or station needs certain traffic. Cost: $19 to $600 LTEC 45505

GATEWAY A gateway connects two networks together. It can be a built in software system with hardware capability. A gateway allows incoming/outgoing connecting to another network from outside of the local network. A router is a popular example of a gateway. Cost: $29 to $299 LTEC 45506

FIREWALL Firewalls are a barrier that protects a network from destructive content by blocking incoming traffic from another computer or network. Firewalls are configured in both software and hardware. Cost: $59 (mostly software) to $10,000 (mostly hardware) LTEC 45507

WIRELESS AP Wireless AP (Access Point) is a device that sits between a router and other wireless devices. It connects to a router using network cable and provides wireless connection to the other wireless devices in the same network using radio frequency technology. Today, most modem and router combo has the capability of an AP. That makes it one simple device to serve the purpose of Modem/Router/AP. Cost: $29 to $399 LTEC 45508
