Leave the cow on the island and take the hay with him to the main land. Go back to the island for the cow.

 Photography I is an introductory photography course focused on and built around the basic elements of art and principles of design. This class was designed to help students develop their eye as a photographer, and to help them learn to speak about photography as an art form. Students will be introduced to photographers from the past and present who work with different concepts and styles. These photographers, concepts and styles will be the driving force behind what we will discuss and create this semester.

You will have homework EVERY WEEKEND!!! You will have about 16 assignments this marking period. (one per week.)

Stop crying. It’s not that big of a deal. Your homework will almost always be to take 20 photographs showcasing a style, technique or subject matter discussed and practiced in class during the previous week. It only takes about 2 seconds to take a photograph. That’s 40 seconds of homework every week. It only takes about 2 minutes to take a good photograph. That’s 40 minutes of homework every week.

MONDAYTUESDAYWEDNESDAYTHURSDAYFRIDAY You have your homework: 20 points You’re awesome. Work on your project. You’re awesome. Work on your project. You’re awesome. Work on your project. Project due, but it’s no big, ‘cause you’re awesome. You don’t have your homework: -5 points. Must complete written work. You don’t have your homework: -10 points. Must complete written work. You don’t have your homework: -15 points. Must complete written work. You don’t have your homework: -20 points. Must complete written work. You get no credit for handing in homework on a Friday. Who does that? This how homework works…

If you do not bring in photos to work with, you will NOT be allowed to sit at the computers. It doesn’t matter what other work you have to do: edit old photos, complete written class, or complete homework for another class. PRIVILEGE: RIGHT: Something granted to you that can be taken away. Something that is due to a person by law. It is your RIGHT to get an education in the art of Photography. It is a PRIVILEGE that you get to do so with the wonderful equipment (computers, cameras, lights, backdrops, etc.). As your teacher, I reserve the RIGHT to remove any and all PRIVILEGES you have lost due to lack of effort, lack of preparation, or inappropriate behavior.

SOMETIMES you take all 20 pictures, and have them in on a Monday but… they stink. DON’T WORRY!!! 1.I will certainly be the first to tell you if/when your photos stink. 2. I will also ask you to reshoot the assignment, because I know you can do better. 3. You’ll get full homework credit for trying, and for being prepared on Monday.

HOWEVER, if you choose not to reshoot the assignment, and continue to work with your photographs that stink, I will have to grade them accordingly. Stinky photos get stinky grades. If I ask you to reshoot, it’s it your best interest to reshoot.

SundayMondayTuesdayWednesdayThursdayFridaySaturday Class reviews new assignment You manage your time well and get your homework done. You do NOT wait until Sunday night to do your homework. -Homework check. -Review and demo of project. -Work on project. Work on project. -Work on project. -Hand in project. -Get new assignment

Projects are usually 4 edited photos that you worked on throughout the week. I will show you how to edit them, and what results I’m looking for. Projects are always counted as a test grade. I look at your 4 photos, and average them together. Yes, you will have a test grade every week. You will also lose 5 points from your final project or every day your homework is late… don’t be that guy! Remember that -5 points for every day you forget your homework?

-Photo projects are 60% of your marking period grade, so you should do them all. -Class Participation is 10% of your marking period grade. Class Participation includes your Photo of the Day responses, participation in class discussions, and In-Class Challenges. -Quizzes are 20% of your marking period grade, so know your stuff. -Homework is 10% of your marking period grade, but missing homework adds up very quickly and directly effects your Project grade, so beware!

In-Class Challenges are awesome! You, and a group of 3 other students will be asked to shoot an example of the skill/techniques we are learning about that week (i.e.: lighting, angles, etc.) using our professional equipment. One of you will be the photographer, another in charge of lighting, the model will both model and edit the photo, and the printer will print the photo. Your class’ photos will be voted on by the other photo classes from best to worst. And your class will vote on their photos. The winners will each get 5 points added to their weekly projects. Second place will get 2 points added to their weekly projects. It gets pretty competitive.

1. Absolutely NO food or drink are allowed in this room. None. Forget it. 2. Absolutely NO completing homework for other classes in this room. If I see it happening, I will tear up your work, and tell that teacher what you’ve done. I can’t help it. It’s a natural, instant reaction. It cannot be stopped. 3. There will be NO cell phone usage in class. Should I find you secretly texting or worse actually having a phone conversation in class, you will instantly receive a lunch detention and/or ROM and I will take the phone away.*

* I’m supposed to bring your phone to the office to have your parent’s come and pick it up. Sometimes I give you the opportunity to “win” your phone back, but only if you sing a song for the class. I get to choose the song. Usually it’s a Mariah Carey song. If you don’t believe me, you can ask: George Eder, Danielle Adams, Kenny Valentine, Genna Ricciardi, etc. It’s not a good time. Trust me. Don’t let this be you.

4. Seats are assigned. 5. You are to treat these computers like new born babies. You will not write on them. You will not bang on them. You will not harm them in any way. Without a computer, we work from the book. 6. Ipods and MP3 players are allowed, in fact- preferred. I just ask that you keep the volume at a level where I can’t hear it.

In this class, we go by the GRANDMA RULE. I’m pretty easy going, and I like to joke around…BUT- -If you wouldn’t say it to your Grandma, you’re not going to say it here. -If you wouldn’t behave a certain way in front of your Grandma, you’re not going to behave that way here. And don’t even try and tell me your Grandma doesn’t care that you say or do awful things, because I know that she’s a sweet, classy woman. Don’t embarrass her!

Poor Behavior, Language and Decision Making will result in: 1.A stern, verbal warning, possibly in front of the class, which is always embarrassing. 2.A Lunch Detention with yours truly, and a letter home. 3.A ROM, a letter home, and a very disappointed Grandma. (You should be ashamed!) 4.A damaged relationship between you and I. Far worse than any ROM or detention.

Bathroom: -15/15 rule. You will not be allowed to leave the class during the FIRST or LAST 15 minutes of class to use the bathroom. -You MUST sign out when you leave the room, and sign in when you return. Sign in/out sheet is next to the sink. It’s pink.
