THE CELL
I. The history of the cell A. Anton Van Leeuwenhoek- One of the1st people to use microscope to study cells.
B. Robert Hooke-studied cork, the dead cells of oak bark. 1. Hooke described what he was looking at as small box-shaped structures. OR CELLS
C. The work of van Leeuwenhoek, Hooke, C. The work of van Leeuwenhoek, Hooke, and other scientists lead to the CELL THEORY. The cell theory has 3 parts: 1. All organisms are composed of one or more cells. 2. The cell is the basic unit of organization of organisms. 3. All cells come from preexisting cells.
D. In the 1940s scientists developed another type of microscope. 1. The electron microscope magnifies structures up to 500,000x 2. This allowed scientists to study the inside of cells.
II. Types of cells A. There are two basic types of cells. 1. Prokaryotes-cells without membrane-bound structures. a. Membrane-bound structures are called organelles (cell parts) Example: Nucleus
2. Eukaryotes-cells that have membrane-bound structures (organelles)
