Emphysema Hyun Soo Cho

What is Emphysema  A lung disease that the lung keep expands because of the carbon dioxide. When a person breathes in, the lung expands because the carbon dioxide is trapped in the lung that there is no space for the air and the air keep pushes the lung. Damage occurs to bronchiole. Bronchiole is connected to the alveoli, where the oxygen from the air is exchanged for the carbon dioxide.

Cause  Cigarette smoking, air pollution, work hazards, and lung infections cause emphysema.

Progression of the disease  Hard to exhale  Lung won’t contract anymore  Shortness of breathe  Lung expands ribs.

Therapy/treatment  Can reduce the rate of progression  Remove the portion of lung

Outcome for recovery  After surgery, there are more space than before  Can be contracted  Breathe better

Expected outcome of emphysema  People die when they continues to smoke even though they know they have the disease  Get worse over time  Based on the age, how well you take care of yourself, how bad the lung is
