Reading Olympics

Children learn an average of 4,000 to 12,000 new words each year as a result of reading books. We have introduced Reading Olympics in order to encourage personal reading in our pupils and in turn to help develop their vocabulary and understanding.

What does it involve? Each pupil in S1 and S2 will be introduced to the scheme with a personality quiz to determine their interests and hobbies. This quiz will then allow us to compile a list of books which best suit the needs and interests of each individual child. Mystery Romance Horror Comic Books Biographies Science Fiction

How does it work? Select a book Reading Response Journal Awards

Selecting a book Using the booklist from the personality quiz pupils will select a book to read. This book will be shown to the class teacher to be approved. Pupils will read during their library period and at home. Each student should read a selection of fiction and non-fiction texts.

Reading Response Journal Each pupil will be given a Reading Response Journal. Pupils must complete 2-3 entries for each book they read. These can be completed during their library period or at home. Pupils can choose from a variety of different written responses.

Reading Response Journal Turn favourite section into a script Crossword Puzzle Book Summary Interview with author Cartoon of characters (Label showing their personality) Review comparing book and film Write new blurb Draw map Write a poem or a song about the book Review of character and plot Make predictions Newspaper Article Write first chapter of sequel Scrapbook Write alternative ending Character ‘this is my life’

Awards Pupils win awards based on the amount of books they read in the school year. 8 Books = Bronze 12 Books = Silver 20 Books = Gold

Awards At the end of the school year each teacher will be asked to nominate one pupil as their Star Reader. These pupils will receive an extra prize of a £10 book voucher.

Parental Involvement Parents/Guardian will have the chance to get involved in their child’s reading. This is a very important part of the scheme as it encourages pupils to read at home. Parents will have the opportunity to fill out a short ‘Parental Support Sheet’ at the end of each book. This will allow the Parent/Guardian to evaluate the child’s progress and also allow each pupil evaluate their own progress.

World Book Day Thursday 3 rd March 2016 is World Book Day and the pupils of Stewarton Academy will have the opportunity to take part in a number of activities designed to promote a love of reading. World Book Day is an opportunity for pupils to see the fun side of reading.
