Language Arts Mrs. Cook Slide 1

Why should we have Procedures ? Slide 2

Procedures are a part of life They allow complex operations to run smoothly with minimal confusion, low stress, and less wasted time. Airports Driving Restaurants Movies School Where else are procedures practiced? Slide 3

Classroom and Academic Expectations Expectations Slide 4

Classroom Expectations The atmosphere in this classroom will be formal and academic, but comfortable. Students will work hard, learn about literature and language, and hopefully enjoy the process. If a visitor walked into our classroom during the day, what should they see? Slide 5

My expectations Things for students to know to ensure the classroom runs smoothly: We are a community. In this community we respect every person in this room. This is our classroom. We will handle all equipment and materials properly at all times. My learning is my responsibility. Every student should prepare for his or her own learning. Cheating or plagiarizing will not be tolerated. Slide 6

Academic Expectations Come to class on time and have materials ready Follow teacher’s directions the first time and complete assignments Work hard and enjoy the process Do your best Do not complain Slide 7

Daily Procedures Slide 8

Entering the Classroom 1.Enter the room quickly and quietly 2.Check for any handouts on the entry table 3.Be seated 4.Read the bell ringer assignment posted on the board and start working 5.If you finish the bell ringer early, work on something else quietly 6.Quietly, patiently wait for instruction Slide 9

What is a bell ringer? Write down daily quote and date Answer one of three “What do you think” questions Read handouts Get materials ready Reading assignment Writing assignment Slide 10

When you complete work early... Quietly read a book Organize your planner or homework Use your hand held computer for academic work Sit quietly Do a crossword puzzle Work on homework Twiddle your thumbs Slide 11

Class Schedule Bell Ringer Daily objective and agenda Teacher–instructions/Modeling Student–guided instruction/Practice Assessment/Closure – Exit Ticket Slide 12

What is an Exit Ticket? Write any three things that you learned in class that period and sign your name - How many lights we have on the ceiling doesn’t count … Slide 13

Tardy Procedure (1) Enter the classroom quietly, pick up the daily handouts, and join in the classroom activities with minimal disruption. — You must pick up and fill out a “tardy form” explaining the reason for the tardy. The form can be found at the entrance table by the door. You will turn it in by the end of the class period to me or to the form box if it is excused. Slide 14

Tardy Procedure (2) If you accumulate 3 unexcused tardy forms in one grading period, we will discuss a consequence. — If you accumulate 4 tardy forms or more in one grading period, an office referral will be written with the tardy forms attached. — If you are more than 10 minutes late to class (unexcused), it will be counted as an unexcused absence. Slide 15

Absence Procedure When you are absent, check with your group to find out what you missed. Do not ask the teacher. – Remember 3 before Me If you are missing work from an absence, the “Class Aid Box” will provide the materials you are missing. You will have until the end of the week to complete your missed work. Slide 16

Listening & Responding When we are having class discussions, raise your hand to be called on and actively listen to whoever is speaking. Teacher will give specific instructions when students are to call out answers without first raising their hands. Ask only questions that are relevant to the lesson. Be respectful of all comments and ideas, even if they differ from yours. Slide 17

Group Work Throughout the year, groups will be created for various assignments. Each student in a cooperative group will have a task which will be assigned or determined by group members — Example of tasks: - recorder - presenter - materials person - clean up person - encourager - leader–keep group on task Slide 18

Atten – Huh! I will say, “Listen up” or “I need your attention” and I will hold up my hand. When you see my hand you are to: 1) stop what you are doing. 2) look at the teacher. 3) raise your hand until the class is silent. Slide 19

End of the Class Dismissal Procedure Hand in work Make sure desk area is neat and trash is picked up When the bell rings, be seated and look at the teacher (All students must be seated) Teacher dismisses class Proceed quickly and quietly out the door Slide 20

Consequences Verbal warning Written warning Send to office Conference with teacher / parents Other: detention, action plan form, SIT referral, behavior contract Slide 21

Leaving the Classroom Get permission from the teacher without disrupting class. You must have a hall pass to leave the room. Teacher will not sign passes to go to your car. Slide 22

Bathroom Use The best time for bathroom use is during passing period. You should not leave class to use the bathroom unless it is truly necessary. You may use the restroom 3 times per grading period without a penalty. Only 1 person at a time will use the bathroom. Slide 23

Slide 24

Exit through North Commons doors. Go the parking lot Make sure there is room for an emergency vehicle to pull up to the school Wait until you are called back inside. Walk quickly and quietly back to the classroom Get seated and quickly return to the classroom task Fire Drill Slide 25

Stay in the classroom Take shelter under desks if necessary Wait for directions from teacher When drill is over, quickly return to the learning task Tornado Slide 26

Teacher locks door Students stay in room Students wait for further instructions Students return to learning task Safety Drill Slide 27

Slide 28

Classroom Visitors You may smile and you should say hello if it is appropriate and it does not disrupt the class Continue to work in class as you normally would Remember to make a good impression for visitors. We want to impress them. Slide 29

Guest Teacher Be polite and respectful. The teacher is a guest and we want to make a good impression. Continue to work in class as you normally would. Slide 30

Thank you for following the classroom procedures. This will allow us to have a wonderful, creative, and productive year in class with minimal stress and wasted time. What other procedures should be added to our classroom list? Slide 31
