Your company slogan Introduction Set toward the end of World War II in 1944, on an island off the coast of Italy, Joseph Heller‘s Catch 22 is a satirical antiwar novel. It features black humor ) (黑色幽默), an unusual narrative structure, surrealism (超现实主义 ), and a not-so-heroic protagonist who struggles to deal with the insanity of war and concludes that the only sane response to it is not to participate in it.

Your company slogan Introduction American army pilot John Yossarian is an antihero, that is, a protagonist lacking some traditionally heroic qualities. He is obsessed with being rotated out of active flight duty His commander, Colonel Cathcart, keeps raising the number of missions the men in the squadron must fly before they can be rotated out. Consequently, Yossarian is desperate to find another way out of his dilemma.

Your company slogan Introduction He asks the squadron's doctor, Doc Daneeka, to declare him unfit for duty by reason of insanity. Doc refuses, citing the mysterious Catch-22. if Yossarian asks to be let out of his duties, he must be sane. Only a crazy man would want to continue to fly missions, but the only way Daneeka can ground him, according to Catch-22, is if he asks to be grounded-which would indicate his sanity. The circular reasoning of this "catch" is the central metaphor for the absurdity of war and the military bureaucracy.

Your company slogan Characters Yossarian paranoid, thinks everyone is trying to kill him (which is true); thinks everyone is crazy; feels guilty about the death of Snowden, which was the traumatic experience which changes his view of war.

Your company slogan Characters Cathcart colonel that desperately wanted to be a general; unsure of himself, wanted to impress the generals- this is why he keeps raising the number of missions

Your company slogan Characters Orr shares tent with Yossarian, practices crashing every mission- eventually crashes and escapes; good with his hands

Your company slogan Characters Doc Daneeka depressed, dies figuratively (dies on paper, so he is considered dead); doctor for the squadron; self-pitying hypochondriac; refuses to ground Yossarian because Doc is selfish

Your company slogan Characters Milo Minderbinder mess officer; leader of the syndicate (black market/underground business dealings); aim is to give the men the best meals in the world; will do anything for a profit, even bomb his own squadron

Your company slogan Characters McWatt freckled nose; buzzes Yossarian's tent for fun, but stops when he finds it scares him; Yossarian's pilot; slices Kid Sampson in half by accident, and then kills himself

Your company slogan Characters Major Major misfit his entire life, not accepted because he was promoted to squadron commander- became a recluse; told Sgt. Towser to only let people into his office when he was out- tried to avoid people

Your company slogan Characters AATappman chaplain, very timid, but wants to be stronger; given the third degree for stealing a tomato; misses his wife terribly

Your company slogan Themes Pity Pity - The reader has pity for each soldier every time he is afraid to go on a mission. Reality Reality- Each soldier has to face the fact that there is a chance that he may never come down from a mission alive. Hope Hope- Orr has a constant hope of crashing successfully and escaping to Sweden.

Your company slogan Themes Sanity Sanity--Yossarian claims that he is the only sane one in the squadron and everyone else is crazy. Friendship Friendship- -Yossarian's bonds with the other men are important. Confusion Confusion-- A great deal of confusion is caused by the use of the term Catch-22.

Your company slogan Themes Greed Greed-- The Machiavellian philosophy of Cathcart and Milo demonstrates this theme. Guilt Guilt-- The death of Snowden plagues Yossarian throughout the war.
