Main Idea The main idea is the is the idea most of the passage talks about. It is the basic point that the author wants to convey to the reader. The main idea must have supporting details.

Supporting Details The main idea will not be very strong without its supporting details. The sentences that explain,describe, and support the main idea. The supporting details are usually facts with a few opinions to make their argument stronger.

Example 1 Once upon a time there was a young girl named Mary. She lived in a small cottage with her mother. One day her mother was very sick and she needed to go to a docter,or the doctor come to her. Her mother would not let her leave and exactly 2 days from then she grew to sick to say no,so mary left and went throught the woods even though she was told never to go through the woods at night time because everyone always disappars.But she had to if she wanted to save her mother.So as she was running through the woods she could hear her mother calling for her,but she couldn’t fing her way back.
