Principals regarding Safety and Federal Funds All projects must be designed to meet safety standards. –AASHTO Geometric Design Guidelines –MUTCD –AASHTO Road side Design Guidelines –Highway Capacity Manual

Federal Programs for infrastructure –Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) –Railway/Highway Grade Crossing Program –High Risk Rural Roads (HR3) –Safe Routes to Schools Program (SRTS)

Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) –23 USC 120(c). –$14 million per year with 10% match –Allocated to Regions based on the percentage of top 15 percent SPIS sites –All public roads are eligible Federal Programs for infrastructure

Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) Eligible work –Intersection improvements –Curve realignment –Traffic calming –Improved delineation or marking –Fixed object removal –Slope flattening and clear zone improvements –School zone safety improvements –Pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements –Installation or improvement of signs.

Application Procedures: –Region Traffic Managers may solicit project proposals from local agencies. –The request for submittal of project proposals outlines general requirements –All submittals are prioritized. –Agencies are notified regarding funding for their projects.
