Welcome to Back to School Night!

Introduction Teaching Experience – Canyon View/Woodbury (10 years) College - Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Master’s Degree in Education / Concentration in Reading Both Parents are Teachers

Philosophy of Education Philosophy – I believe that children rise to the expectations that are set for them. I believe in creating a positive classroom environment where learning is enjoyable.

ABC’s of First Grade… 1) School Hours *8:00-1:57 M,T,TH,F * 8:00-1:17 W *Instructional Schedule 2) Label All Items (sweaters/jackets/lunch boxes) 3) Star Student *Poster will go home on Friday and will be due back on Monday

4) Birthdays *No food items due to severe allergies (pencils, books, etc) 5) Healthy Snack- please avoid: thermos containers/ label all snacks

6) PTA- 100% Participation! PTA spends about $100/child at Woodbury Elementary. Here's how it's spent: Kids Programs (City Fitness (only school in the district which offers this!), Lunchtime Activities, LEAD Incentives) - 43% Academic Programs (Assemblies, Art) - 34% Staff & School Support (Money to teachers for supplies, NEW Computers, Health Clerk, Supplies) - 20% Social Events (Welcome Coffee, Donuts w/ Dad, Muffins w/ Mom) - 2% Business Expenses - 1%

7) Absences – No Independent Study Contracts 8) Fevers = no school! 9) Absent Work 10)Take home folder (Blue)- returned every day 11)Field Trip- Kellogg House

Conference Week 1) September 8 th – 12 th (September 2 nd -5 th ) 2) No School on Monday, September 8 th 3) Minimum Days Tuesday-Friday (Sept. 9 th -12 th ) * 1:17 p.m. dismissal 5) Sign up online (Sign Up Genius) 6) A time to: set goals for the year review our Homework Policy introduce Math Fact/Sight Word testing review reading assessment scores address any questions/concerns

Curriculum Language Arts – Whole Class/RtI RtI (Response to Instruction)- 4 days a week (Music on Th.) Common Assessments Extend learning/Intensive instruction FLEXIBLE!!! (Based on each child’s needs)

Anthology books will go home on Wednesdays (check website for story) and will need to be returned the following day RtI book baggies need to be returned the following day

Writing Process Units of Study Daily writing activities Writer’s Workshop Spelling when writing – developmental stages

Spelling Houghton Mifflin – Program is based on reading series Start when we get to Theme 3 (about one month) Spelling tests on Friday (think of how the sounds match or don’t match the letters, highlighted parts)

Math McGraw Hill – My Math (start in September) Grading Problem Solving- discussing how a problem is solved (higher level thinking skills!) *Common Core Standards Weekly Basic Math Fact tests- flashcards discussed/handed out during conferences

Science 3 Units: Air and Weather Solids and Liquids Plants and Animals Investigation, experiments, recording data HANDS ON!

Social Studies Scott Foresman Booklets (no textbook) Six themes: Citizenship, People and Places, Our Country, Changes Over Time, Celebrate Cultures, and Goods and Services

Physical Education Mondays / City Fitness Wear tennis shoes these days!

Music/Computer Lab * Formal music instruction every other week (Th.) * Formal computer Lab once a week (Miss Murphy) * AR Quizzes (explained at Parent Conference)

Homework Weekly contract sent home on Monday, returned Monday We will start on September 15th Please make sure your child writes his /her name and number on the cover Weekly assignment on website Homework Policy- Odds only (for math) *20 minutes *Challenge!
