1 Antihypertensive Trial Outcome Differences: Diuretic vs. Calcium Channel Blocker Compared to participants assigned to the diuretic, those assigned to the calcium channel blocker had: –1 mm Hg higher SBP and 1 mm Hg lower DBP –No difference in CHD, total mortality, stroke, or combined CVD –38% higher risk of heart failure –35% higher risk of hospitalization for heart failure ALLHAT

2 Antihypertensive Trial Outcome Differences: Diuretic vs. ACE Inhibitor Compared to participants assigned to the diuretic, those assigned to the ACE inhibitor had: –2 mm Hg higher SBP and no change in DBP overall 4 mm Hg higher SBP and 1 mm Hg higher DBP in Blacks –No difference in CHD or total mortality –15% higher risk of stroke 40% higher risk of stroke for Blacks ALLHAT

3 Antihypertensive Trial Outcome Differences: Diuretic vs. ACE Inhibitor Compared to participants assigned to the diuretic, those assigned to the ACE inhibitor had: –10% higher risk of combined CVD outcome 19% higher risk of combined CVD outcome in Blacks 6% higher risk of combined CVD outcome in non-Blacks –11% higher risk for being hospitalized or treated for angina –10% higher risk for undergoing coronary revascularization –19% higher risk of heart failure ALLHAT
