How words are created By: Emily Birch

Compounds A compound is a word with two full words together. Examples: handbag, liftoff, downtown

Blends Blends are putting word parts together to create blends. Examples: motel, squiggle, brunch, splotch

clipped words Clipped words are created by shortening existing words. Examples: Condo, auto, lunch, fan, phone, gas, net, taxi cab, and vet.

Echoic words Words that represent sounds. Examples: z z z z z z z, shush, bop, and tick tock

Borrowing Examples: pistol, robot, cookie, volcano, plaid Taking or adopting words from other languages into English words.

Acronyms Words that are formed from the first letter in each word. Examples: NFL, USA,NBA,WNBA,LOL,MLB,NHL

Eponyms Words based on or derived from a person’s name. Examples: God, Lord
