About Fermentation… Fermentation: conversion of sugars and starches to alcohol through enzymes Fermentation: happens in cytoplasm What happens?: large organic molecules; broken down into simpler molecules by microorganisms.
What are the two types of fermentation? Alcohol or Ethanol Fermentation Lactic Acid Fermentation Fermentation occurs from Anaerobic respiration (no oxygen required)
Alcoholic Fermentation What happens? glucose is split into 2 pyruvic acid. 2 pyruvic acid split into carbon dioxide and alcohol. Happens in a yeast cell or bacterium.
Lactic Acid Fermentation Occurs in animal muscle cells when they get overly fatigued. Glucose splits into 2 pyruvic acids. 2 pyruvic acids splits into lactic acid.
What does Fermentation do? Fermentation is a process of energy production in the cell. Glucose undergoes fermentation- this is how we get beer, pickles, and wine.
