Diversity in the Actuarial Profession Bob Mucci Transatlantic Reinsurance Company CAS Spring Meeting May 19 – 22, 2002

A Global Profession  According to the International Actuarial Association, the actuarial profession is the most truly globally organized profession.  The IAA currently has 44 Full members plus 23 Observer members comprising over 30,000 fully qualified actuaries in more than 50 countries.  The IAA is recognized as a non-profit, non- political and non-governmental organization on the Roster of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.

A Global Business  Transatlantic Reinsurance is a leading international reinsurance organization with operations in twelve different countries on six continents.  Roughly half of our business emanates from outside the United States.  We write business in more than 80 different countries.

Benefits  By expanding the pool of talent we can find the best qualified people.  Multiple language skills enable us to read submissions in other languages and communicate more effectively with our branches and our clients.  First hand knowledge of the insurance market and legal systems of other countries helps us to better understand and evaluate the business.  A diverse staff helps to foster an intellectually stimulating and enjoyable work environment.

Accomodations  Sponsorship for green card or visa.  Occasional long vacation in order to travel home and visit friends and family.  Access to classes or other opportunities to improve written and spoken English skills.

Recruiting Tips  Keep an open mind.  Don’t mistake a lack of confidence speaking English for poor communication skills.  Weigh a person’s accomplishments against any obstacles or barriers he or she may have had to overcome.  Remember that as with any team, not all jobs within a department require the exact same set of skills.
