Learning Target Today, students will be able to identify and apply comma rules

Rule #10 Use a comma to shift between the main discourse and a quotation. Example: Incorrect: McKenna said "Nolan is so awesome!" Where does the comma go?

Correct Sentence McKenna said, "Nolan is so awesome!"

Rule #11 Use commas wherever necessary to prevent possible confusion or misreading o C ommas in the wrong places can break a sentence into illogical segments or confuse readers with unnecessary and unexpected pauses.

Example: Incorrect: To Johnny Alan was the coolest person ever. Correct: To Johnny, Alan was the coolest person ever. Example

Common Comma Abuse

Rule #12 DO NOT use a commas to separate the subject from the verb.

Incorrect: The most important attribute of a ball player, is quick reflex actions. Correct: The most important attribute of a ball player is quick reflex actions. Example
