Construction of Machine Tool  Structure of Machine tools  Slide Ways  Drive System  Mechanical  Electrical  Hydraulic  Pneumatic  Bearing and Spindles  Control System of Machine Tools  Locating Principles and Locators

What is MACHINE TOOL ?  A MACHINE TOOL is a powered mechanical device, typically used to fabricate metal components of given shape, size and accuracy of machines by Machining, which is the selective removal of metal.  MACHINE TOOLS can regenerate themselves (as compound to other machines)

Evolution of Machine Tool

Example of Machine Tools  Lathes  Shaper  Drilling Machines  Milling Machines  Grinding Machines  Planer  Sawing Machine  Gear Cutting Machine  Broaching Machine

Classification of Machine Tools  The required dimensions and forms of parts are usually obtained by one or more of the following methods:  Casting of modern metal in a mold  Joining of parts by welding or similar methods  Forging, stamping or other forming processes  Machining

Classification of Machine Tools Machine Tools General purpose (Manual) Semi- automatic (NC) Automatic (CNC)

Machine Tool Components Machine Tool Drive System Main Drive Spindle Drive (Gear Box) Feed Drive (Feedbox) Bearing System Structure, Bed or Stand Clamping+ Locator system Control System Coolant System

Design Challenges of Machine Tools  Modern machine tool designers are meet the challenges of  Reduce cost  Reduce the production lead-time  Manufacture the machine tools more accurately  Improve the vibration characteristics  Increase the versatility  Improve the control

Design Requirements of a Machine Tool  This development is achieved through  Increased cutting and feed speeds  Increased power of the main drives  Use of step-less speed(PIV) and feed drive system  Reduced unproductive handling time  Simultaneous multiple operation  Improved static and dynamic rigidity  Automated working cycle

Continued………… An ever increasing application of electronics, hydraulics and pneumatics in machine tools Simplified controls by the use of interlocking devices Use of standard parts Quick removal of hot chips

Thank you……
