AN INTRODUCTION ENGLISH 9 RESEARCH PAPER

ALL GOOD RESEARCH Starts with a question / problem Relies on REPUTABLE sources Is part of a long and detailed process

QUESTION FOR RESEARCH Why is this group/person important in music/tv history and what is important about their group? The Beatles The Rolling Stones Mumford and Sons

REPUTABLE SOURCES Three Sources: 1.We’ll use the databases for the first. Practice highlighting and annotating Practice Summary 2.You can use the internet for the other two, but they must be checked first, and you must fill out a source evaluation.

REPUTABLE? QUESTIONS TO ASK Who wrote it? Are they qualified to talk about this subject? What education or job title do they have to make them reputable? Where was it published (book, journal, website)? New York Times Health Section vs. Jimmy Jim’s Website on Peanut Butter When was it published? Depending on our topic, research advances quickly.

SUMMARY OF FIRST SOURCE

WHAT SHOULD SUMMARY DO? 1.State the main idea / purpose of the text being summarized. This is the central idea/main point you get from the article after reading. 2.State the most important details given to prove that point. List these, but list them in paragraph form. 3. Finish by restating the purpose of the text again. “These details lead the author to the conclusion that…”

PROCEDURE FOR SUMMARY Planning to Summarize: 1.List (bullet points) the most important details from the text. Use 7-10 details. Go back through the article and read your highlighting and annotating. Decide which 7-10 details are the most important ideas in this text. Important = helps answer our question. Restate in your own words. Summary 1.Write a statement that you feel summarizes the purpose of the text. What is the point of why the author wrote this article? 2.In paragraph form, write the most important details that you listed from this article. 3.Finish by restating the main idea again (“These details lead the author to the conclusion that…”)
