Persecution of Jews and Muslims: During the Counter- Reformation By: Abigail Krautheim

What happened? As Protestants broke away from Catholic Church people started turning hostile Catholics and non-Catholics persecuted each other Protestants began to disagree against other Protestants Differences in beliefs led to conflicts Time where no religion was safe: atheists were created

What happened? New religious freedom brought conflict and turmoil Both Catholics and Protestants believed Jews and Muslims as heretics 1492-1500: Jews and Muslims were forced to convert to Catholic Christianity or leave Spain- Inquisition Jews resettled in eastern and southern Europe

What happened? Forced to live in ghettos- apartment-like prisons Feared witches were about the land so they started the witch trials Killed many innocent people- Protestants, Jews, and Muslims were also blamed

What happened in rest of Europe? Jews who converted to Christianity or belonged to an educated elite stayed in Spain In many areas of Europe, Jews (and some Muslims) were allowed to stay and live peacefully Had more freedom than when in the Middle Ages

Who was involved? Martin Luther Anabaptists John Calvin Jews and Muslims Ulrich Zwingli

How did this event show religious disunity in Europe? This event showed religious disunity in Europe because many people were split apart by their beliefs Blamed each other for unexplainable problems and diseases Were considered to be performing heresy Showed that new religions didn’t trust one another
