UN-GGIM  Purpose of the UN-GGIM: – play a leading role in setting the agenda for the development of global geospatial information management – promote the use of geospatial information in addressing key global challenges  UN-GGIM reports to the UN General Assembly via the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)  Regional entities: – UN-GGIM Asia-Pacific – UN-GGIM Americas – UN-GGIM Arab States – UN-GGIM Europe – UN-GGIM Africa (through UN Economic Commission for Africa)

UN-GGIM  IHO objective: ensure that hydrography is appropriately represented in doctrine being developed by UN-GGIM and adopted by UN (IHO WP task )  IHO contribution based on: – MSDIWG & HO participation in developing national/regional SDI – GEBCO project in relation with developing a global SDI  Participation in meetings planned in 2015 – See Annex 1 to IRCC7.10B - Rev2

International Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction  IHO participation to the preparatory process established by the UN General Assembly to develop a post-2015 framework for disaster risk reduction (IHO CL 53/2014 refers)  3 rd World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (WCDRR-3) - Sendai, Japan March 2015: adoption of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction  The framework identifies the need for “ focused action within and across sectors by States at local, national, regional and global levels”  Four priority areas: 1.Understanding disaster risk 2.Strengthening disaster risk governance to manage disaster risk 3.Investing in disaster risk reduction for resilience 4.Enhancing disaster preparedness for effective response, and to “Build Back Better” in recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction

International Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction  States, regional and international organizations and other relevant stakeholders are invited to “ take into consideration the key activities listed under each of these four priorities and should implement them, as appropriate, taking into consideration respective capacities and capabilities, in line with national laws and regulations ”  Impact on the relevant IHO Resolutions and activities, in particular IHO Resolution 1/2005, as amended - Response to Disasters, to be considered by: – IRCC at the global level – RHCs at the regional level

Post-2015 Sustainable Development Agenda  Outcome of the Rio+20 Conference: develop a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which will build upon the Millennium Development Goals and converge with the post 2015 development agenda before the end of 2015  Process led by UN Member States with participation from major groups and other civil society stakeholders  An ocean-specific sustainable development goal is expected to be included in the post-2015 development agenda  No plan for further direct involvement by the IHO – See Annex 2 to IRCC7.10B - Rev2

GEO - Background  GEO is a voluntary partnership of governments and international organizations launched in 2003 in response to calls for action by the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development and by the G8 (Group of Eight) leading industrialized countries  GEO is coordinating efforts to build a Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) in order to exploit the growing potential of Earth observations to support decision making in an increasingly complex and environmentally stressed world  Composition: – Members: 96 Governments and the European Commission – Participating organizations: 87 intergovernmental, international, and regional organizations with a mandate in Earth observation or related issues – Observers

GEO - Background  GEO governance: – meets annually in plenary session – strategic guidance provided by a Ministerial Summit every two or three years – GEO Secretariat hosted by the WMO Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland – Implementation Plan from which a rolling quadrennial work programme is derived – GEO relies mainly on the in-kind contribution to implement its work programme  Regional dimension based on five regional caucuses: – Africa – Americas – Asia and Oceania – Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) – Europe  Decision IRCC-6/21 recognized the importance of GEO and agreed to continue participation in GEO related events by all means, with the IHB in the lead but involving the RHCs, MSs and GEBCO

GEO - Current activities  Evaluation of the GEOSS implementation plan  Preparation of the GEOSS implementation plan – Guidance provided by 3 rd GEO Ministerial Summit (Geneva, January 2014) – Draft GEO Strategic Plan considered at GEO-XI (Geneva, November 2014)  Pending issues: – sustainability of in situ observation networks – scope of the societal benefits of GEOSS – data sharing principles – role of participating organizations in the governance of GEO – relation with other initiatives  Participation in meetings planned in 2015 – See Annex 3 to IRCC7.10B - Rev2 – Note deadline for responding to the call for side-events for GEO-XII and 4 th GEO Ministerial Summit: 12 June
