How to Succeed in Math Class

Many people remember their college math classes as: Lecture …

… followed by homework … and tests

For many people, lecture is not the most effective way to learn.

Especially in math, you need to work through problems yourself.

In this class, we’re going to reorganize the steps to try to make things easier for you.

Step 1: Start by looking at the homework. Step 2: Come to class. Step 3: Get help if you need it. Step 4: Get 100% on all the homework. Step 5: Get 100% on all the Practice Tests. The Steps to Success

Step 1: Start by looking at the homework

Looking at the homework before coming to class, is like reading the novel before going to English lit.

Click the name of an assignment to begin.

The homework has lots of tools to help you.

Click the Media link first.

The Media link gives you access to many extra resources.

My Lecture: Hear what I say and see what I write.

PowerPoints: Watch me at the “board”.

Cheat Sheets: Get a head start on the class handouts. Click Download

Websites: Sample different explanations.

Videos: Enjoy different “guest speakers”.

Once you’ve opened the Media link … … the questions become available.

Each section only has a few questions … If you miss any, you can go back later to fix them.

The homework still has all the “helpers”.

Be sure to use the Ask My Instructor button to me your questions.

I can click on a link in the and see both the question… … and your answer.

Do your homework in a spiral notebook. That way you can make notes on the problems that you have questions about.

Don’t get defeated.

Look through the resources at home.

Try some of the homework problems.

… and get help with the “heavy lifting” in class.

Step 2:Come to Class

Bring your spiral notebook… … and I can help you polish off your homework.

Now that you’ve seen what we’re studying… you’ll work on harder problems with others in class.

… you can ask for help. If you get stuck …

You can access these assignments from home if you’re absent.

These are set so that you can take them as many times as you want – it keeps the highest grade.

The Sample Tests and Quizzes are just for practice.

Step 3:Get help if you need it!

Be sure to use the Ask My Instructor button to me your questions.

Work with a buddy in class.

… class is the place for hands-on help! Don’t be shy …

If you still don’t understand the material go see one of the tutors. It’s FREE!

The schedule of tutors for this class is in the announcements.

Step 4: Get 100% on all your Homework

ASK if you need help with a homework problem!

Step 4: Get 100% on all your Practice Quizzes

Once you’ve taken a Practice Quiz, find out what you still need to study by selecting Review.

To save yourself a lot of time, click on Print Test. As you review, write down the answers that you got right so that you don’t have to work those problems out again!

To see which questions you missed, click on Summary.

The questions you missed (or didn’t do) have red X’s.

It shows you the question and your answer. Now figure out which of the other 3 is correct (and why)!

The questions on the real test are very similar to the ones on the practice tests.

Don’t Forget the Steps to Success

Step 1: Start by looking at the homework

Step 2:Come to Class

Step 3:Get help if you need it!

Step 4: Get 100% on all your Homework

Step 4: Get 100% on all your Practice Quizzes

You can be successful at math!
