Invocation for the 5 th Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina August 29, 2010

Most Compassionate God, we gather this day as we rejoice in your power for New Life! Most Compassionate God, only you could have carried us through the reign of chaos which sought to destroy us!

Without you, we would have crumbled in despair. Without you, any hope would have been crushed. You gave us courage to work for your future. You gave us strength to live in unseen hope. With you, courageous volunteers offered their hope and help to heal our hearts, our homes, and our churches.

Through your love and the generosity of the people called United Methodist, we continue serving others in your name as you have served us.

Gather us today, God of love and strength! Hear our words of joy! Hear our words of Thanksgiving! Bless us with your Spirit and make us a blessing in your service. Amen.

Litany of Thanksgiving for August 29, 2010

From chaos and death, God has saved us! Our God has never forsaken us!

The faith God has given our lives has carried us through five years of recovery and brought us to this day of Thanksgiving. God has greatly blessed us!

From the ends of the earth, servants came to offer hope and healing. We give thanks to God this day!

From wood and nail, brick and glass, God has restored our hearts and homes. From prayers and hopes, trust and love, God has given us new life for ministry.

May our homes gather the sounds of laughter and love, symbols of our life together. May our churches hold treasured memories of growing in faith.

The Spirit of God will create us anew in the times ahead. God is our Rock and our Salvation. A very present help in times of need.

We give thanks to God this day for sustaining us, for healing us, that we might again lift high the Cross of Jesus Christ.

God, let the peace and power of your Spirit renew and lead us all! Touch us again with your sustaining presence. Grant us the strength to now turn and offer a healing touch, a comforting word, a willing spirit, to those who may yet not be whole. Closing Prayer

Come, Lord Jesus, that through your spirit and your people, all things might be made new. These things we pray in the strong name of Jesus.

Amen.
