Reasons for Prayer Chapter 23 Lesson 3

Turn to page 148 in your text. Starting at the bottom of the second column, read to find the four reasons for prayer.

Blessing and Adoration Blessing is an encounter between God and man; it is man receiving God’s gifts and responding to them. Adoration is recognition before the Creator that man is a creature; man is in wonder and awe of God.

Thanksgiving We are united with Christ in offering thanksgiving, which is done perfectly in the Eucharist We should offer prayers of thanksgiving for all God’s gifts.

Contrition Sorrow for our sin is a recognition of ourselves before God; we see our sinfulness and failings in God’s plan. We ask God for his forgiveness, expressing our sorrow and remorse for our sins, knowing they offend God and neighbor. This is a prayer of humility.

Petition and Intercession By petition, we express awareness of our relationship with and dependence upon God. Intercession is when we imitate Christ in prayer, praying to the father on behalf of others.
