Engineering Session L&T conference 2112

Theme Assessment, feedback and 2012 We have been a more autonomous faculty for just over 3 years In that time, driven by external and internal factors, we have made a conscious effort to improve the quality and timeliness of assessment and feedback This has gone hand in hand with a desire to improve the student learning experience through more and better formative assessment

Were you aware of this? 1.Yes 2.No

If yes have you changed your approach to assessment and feedback in this time? 1.Yes 2.No 3.Abstain

Discussion points (10 minutes) How were you made aware of these initiatives? How would you have liked these to have been communicated? Have you helped others to improve assessment and feed back; did you offer or did they ask?

Ways of providing feedback There are numerous ways of providing feedback to students I’m going to ask a few questions and then we’ll have a discussion

Are you aware that every first year student in engineering has a clicker? 1.Yes 2.No 3.Sort of

Do you use Turnitin for assessment or feedback? 1.Yes 2.No

Do you use non technological methods for assessment or feedback? 1.Yes 2.No

Discussion points (20 minutes) Is feedback important? Is it needed on all modules? Do students need to be taught how to use feedback? Do we want a unified “faculty” approach? How do we reach out to the “average” lecturer; should we?

Exams A lot of assessment of done using formal exams  Long questions  Short questions  Multiple choice questions  Other types?

Do you use exams on your modules? 1.Always 2.Never 3.Always on some, never of others 4.It depends on what and how I am teaching

Do you think that many people use exams as the easy way out or because they’ve always done them? 1.Yes 2.No 3.Not sure

Discussion points (20 minutes) Why do we use exams? What are they best and worst for? Why are they are good and bad for student learning and engagement? Are there better options?

Conclusion (5 minutes) Where do we go from here? Do we want to take any themes forward? If so, how?
