Let’s Debate! Class debate addressing the following topic: The impact of technology on interpersonal communication. Topics discussed during the debate will include topics we have discussed in class (e.g. self disclosure, close relationships, culture) One side will argue that technology has a positive impact; one side will argue that technology has a negative impact. Sides will be chosen randomly. Use the rest of class to prepare (will also require prep outside of class; bring notes) Debate takes place on Wednesday/Thursday (will take a few minutes before debate to finalize things) Will count as Application Exercise #14

ROUND 1 (approx 8 minutes)ROUND 2 (30 minutes) – 5 mins eachROUND 3 (approx 8 minutes) Opening Remarks – Side 1 Opening Remarks – Side 2 Topic 1 (impact on communication skills, e.g. listening, verbal, nonverbal) o Side 2 o Side 1 Response/Questions - Side 2 response Topic 2 (impact on disclosure and relationships) o Side 1 o Side 2 Response/Questions - Side 1 response Closing Remarks – Side 1 Closing Remarks – Side 2 Debate Rules and Order TOPIC: The impact of technology on interpersonal communication Side 1: Positive impact Side 2: Negative Impact Directions: Break large group into two different groups—each team (within the group) will take a specific topic. Also, assign someone to deliver the opening remarks and closing argument. You are not allowed to interrupt anyone while they are speaking. Decide – Who will make opening remarks? Who will make closing remarks? THREE ROUNDS
