LEARNING What is the definition of a child or young person? The definition of a child is – Human being below the age of 18 years unless, under the law applicable to the child, majority is attained earlier. (Article 1, Convention on rights of a child 1989) The definition of a young person is - ?

LEARNING What is a meant by ‘vulnerable adult’? The definition of a vulnerable adult does vary across boards and trusts. “A person aged 18 years or over who is, or maybe, in need of community care services or is resident in a continuing care facility by reason of mental or other disability, age or illness or who is, or maybe, unable to take care of him or herself or unable to protect him or herself against significant harm or exploitation.” (Regional Adult Protection Policy and procedural Guidance Sept. 2006)

LEARNING Examples of ‘vulnerable adults’ ‘ Vulnerable adults’ could include people who: Older people People with a learning/physical or sensory disability People with mental illnesses or dementia

LEARNING What do we mean by ‘ safeguarding ’? The government has defined the term ‘safeguarding’ children as; “The process of protecting children from abuse or neglect, preventing impairment of their health and development, and ensuring they are growing up in circumstances consistent of the provision of safe and effective care that enables children to have optimum life chances and enter adulthood successfully.” Safeguarding vulnerable adults means: “All work which enables an adult to retain independence, well-being and choice and live a life that is free from abuse and neglect. It is about preventing abuse and neglect as well as promoting good practice for responding to concerns on a multi-agency basis.”

LEARNING What are we safeguarding learners from? What constitutes as a safeguarding concern? Safeguarding issues are always determined by their context and degree of concern or risk related to the issue or incident. For example: Pushing/shoving – This is technically assault. Sexual abuse/harassment Confidentiality and record keeping
