JOŽE PLEČNIK born January 23 1872, Ljubljana died January 7 1957, Ljubljana is the most known Slovenian architect
HIS LIFE worked in father’s joinery workshop finished school in Graz and became an artistic carpenter and furniture designer found an interest in architecture on Otto Wagner’s exposure in 1894 started studying with Otto Wagner and worked in Wagner's office until 1900 spent 10 years practising architecture in Vienna, completing the Langer House, Zacherlhaus and Church of the Holy Spirit
was awarded the Rome Scholarship in 1901 opened his own architecture office in 1911 moved to Prague, started teaching at the college of arts and crafts, began works on Prague Castle in 1921 he taught at ‘Tehniška fakulteta’ in Ljubljana in 1938 became a member of The Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts and was elected an honorary citizen of the city of Ljubljana, received the Medal of Merit, Prešeren Award and was also promoted an honorable Doctor of ‘Tehniška visoka šola' in Ljubljana and Vienna
WORK his works are characterized by iconic, classical forms used in surprising, innovative, unconventional ways forgotten in the 1960s and 1970s, in 1980s and 1990s reconsideration of his work comprehensively and originally solved the urban problems planned many private and public buildings in Vienna, Prague and Ljubljana; Transformed Ljubljana from an ex-Hapsburgs city into the Capital of Slovenia after socialism Plečnik’s masterpieces became popular tourist attraction Ljubljana and Plečnik are being compared to Gaudí and Barcelona.
IMPORTANT WORKS Vienna: Zacherl house and St. Spirit Church Prague: Hradčani (a neighborhood in Prague, including The Prague Castle) Ljubljana: Tromostovje – Triple Bridge, arches of the main city market, barriers on Ljubljanica River, Building of the University Library, Tivoli, 'Čevljarski most‘ – shoemakers’ bridge, cemetery Žale etc. NUK (University Library) is the most important, it is a mixture of different styles
also designed various art manufacture products used to create from different materials (Bogojina, Barje) a lot of plans were completely absurd and weird ( Slovenian parliament, Lady Lourdes church)
also important as an educator is considered the father of the architecture school in Ljubljana the old building of the Tehniška fakulteta was built after his plans influenced the school because of his methods of education the system of education made by him is still being used the University of architecture in Ljubljana is one of the best known and most important architecture schools in the Central Europe
OTHER FACTS he and the facade of the NUK appeared on the 500 SIT banknote since 2007 ‘Katedrala svobode has been on the 0,10€ coin; it was also on the first post stamp in the independent Slovenia in 2002 there was a special edition of stamps with a picture of Plečnik
