Speech Acts /3 ANALYTIC PHILOSOPHY Searle: philosophy of mind, ph. of intention, ontology of social reality ROOTS SPEECH ACTS social acts which are performed in the act of speaking: requesting, promising, commanding, baptising, marrying, apologizing, insulting, charging, forgiving, condemning, sentencing, etc.

B: Oh, I’m awfully sorry. I’ve come by car. (I can’t drink when I drive a car – rejection) A: I must be off. My train is leaving in an hour. B: No hurry, I’ve come by car, I’ll take you to the station. (I’ve got my car here and take you … - offer)
