What is Ethics? The principles of honor and morality; accepted rules of conduct (Webster) Ethical People – Accept and live by a set of moral principles and values – Has an obligation to take morally appropriate actions when confronted with an ethical dilemma

Code of Ethics Held by major IT professional societies Provides direction for workers so that they can act responsibly in their creation and application of information technology

10 Commandments of Computer Ethics 1.Thou shalt not use a computer to harm other people. 2.Thou shalt not interfere with other people's computer work. 3.Thou shalt not snoop around in other people's computer files. 4.Thou shalt not use a computer to steal. 5.Thou shalt not use a computer to bear false witness.

10 Commandments of Computer Ethics cont. 6.Thou shalt not copy or use proprietary software for which you have not paid. 7.Thou shalt not use other people's computer resources without authorization or proper compensation. 8.Thou shalt not appropriate other people's intellectual output. 9.Thou shalt think about the social consequences of the program you are writing or the system you are designing. 10.Thou shalt always use a computer in ways that ensure consideration and respect for your fellow humans.

Respect for Copyrights on Intellectual Property Do not think that people will ever stop infringing on copyright laws Ways to Help – Enforce Copyright laws – Place blocks on material so that it cannot be taken from website – Get rid of the websites that allows intellectual property to be copied – Continue teaching Computer Ethics

Copyright Laws Copyright Law of 1974 – Gives owner “the exclusive rights” to “reproduce the copyrighted word” Software Rental Amendments Act of 1990 – Prohibits the rental, leasing, or lending of copyright software
